Hello! First, thank you for allowing me to jump over from the X-Type posts to the XJ posts! I currently own a 2003 X-Type 2.5 and am thinking of making the leap(er) (ok my attempt at humor) to the bigger cat--a 2008 Jaguar XJ8 with 66K. I would especially be interested in the maintenance costs that some of you have incurred. Any and all assistance is much appreciated. Thank you.

First off the XJ saloon (X350 model) is a much larger car than the X-type, but doesn't weigh a whole lot more due to the all-aluminium construction. There is very little steel in the car, its only where its needed, even the suspension is mostly aluminium, and of course the engine is all-alloy block and heads.

SO fuel consumption is reasonable, and the car very light and handleable on twisty roads.

Servicing cost will not be whole lot more than the X-type, but parts and stuff like tyres usually more. The car has air suspension, so be aware that the c ompressor may need replacing. Air springs are very expensive, but you can get Arnott replacements in the USA, (not here in Europe unfortunately).

Prices are very good on these cars right now, so act soon !

I am not much of a mechanic, however, I have enjoyed adding on Jaguar OEM accessory kit upgrades to my XJ.

A 2008 XJ should have enough "built-in" capability to enable you to do upgrades if you want.

A Navigation system as well as the Jaguar Voice is a nice technology feature. I use the navigation a lot, especially when driving through downtown Chicago.

Depending on the trim level you purchase, consider luxury OEM kits like lambswool floor-mats. The Mocha brown mats I recently purchased will end up matching nicely with the dark brown wood trim and they are very luxurious. You can also choose other accessory upgrades like sport shift knobs, etc.

On the technology side (again depending on trim level) you could also add a Jaguar 6 Disk CD changer in the trunk// Jaguar headrest monitors kit// and even upgraded alloy wheels like Jaguar R-Performance rims.

Well, I just bought an '06 XJ8 at the end of January with 57k miles on it, and remaining CPO warranty. Car is cosmetically pristine, seemed to be well cared for, but after a week I had a long list of items to be repaired. Not sure if this is indicative of most x350s, or if my car just had an accumulation of problems, or it was a "Monday" build...

coolant crossover pipe and thermostat (common problem)
auxiliary coolant pump
wiper harness
wiper motor (common problem)
wiper switch and stalk
LH motor mount
headlamp washer hose (leaking and draining the reservoir)
and possible replacement of the secondary air injector pump

Normal wear and tear/cosmetic issues (not warranty items):
accessory belt (surprised this was deteriorated at 57k miles)
air and cabin filters
rear pads and rotors
trim bezel around ignition switch
fog lamp trim

In the last 1.5 years, the previous owner had repaired under warranty:
coolant reservoir
3 audio speakers
sunroof seal
another headlamp washer hose
headliner reglued

Have yet to get the service history from the first owner/37k miles.

Yeah... not exactly the "reliable" version of Jag I had pictured from reading on this forum... knew about the air suspension and rear suspension bushings. Read up on throttle bodies and suspension clunks as well...
