2014 XJL portfolio HID ballast location
I haven't been able to find this one. I think the ballast has gone out on my HID headlight. I saw how the bumper cover needs to be removed and the headlight assembly needs to be pulled to get to the headlight. I think it is the ballast though. The headlight worked sometimes at first, sometimes it was weak. Last night I used the key to turn on the light. The light came on kind of weak but blue for a couple of seconds and went out. So I am thinking it is the ballast. Do you need to take out the assembly to get it to? Where is the ballast? I can see where the wires plug into the assembly but haven't spotted the ballast.
Is there a way to test the ballast other than just switching with the side that works and seeing if the light comes on. I also don't have a headlight out light, not sure if the XJL has one. My old Merc CLK had a light that came on when the headlight was out but I don't know if the Jaaag has one.
In case the assembly has to be pulled, I noticed there are two hand screws on top of the assembly. Some directions for changing the bulb shows another screw in the wheel well. On the video it showed the screw in the wheel well cover. Haven't taken it off to see if it is behind the wheel well or maybe underneath the assembly. I noticed the bumper cover blocks pulling the assembly out on the side near the hood but it looks like it might be able to angle it out from the corner. I saw the directions on how to pull the assembly and I think it might be worth the hour and half labor since I really don't want to deal it with. Just curious if there is a way to get it to without going through taking off the bumper cover?
I found the ballast on parts geek and will order it. If it isn't the problem they are good with returns.

I don't think there's any way to remove the assembly without removing the bumper and wheel well liner. Removing the wheels makes removing the liners MUCH easier. That being said, the job of removing the bumper and liners really isn't as bad as it sounds.
jjweatherby, looking at the spare headlight housing that I have, the HID ballast is mounted to the underside of the headlight assembly. The module is about 4x4x1/2? You will see it bolted to the underside of the headlight housing, under the headlight itself. You will need a torx bit to take it off. But, the only way to get to it is to remove the bumper cover and then unbolt the headlight assembly from the car.
