Default Check Engine Light - OBDII Codes P0162 and P0061

2013 XJ 5.0LSC, 47K miles. My CEL came on last week after I filled up (premium, of course). This happened once before and it was caused by a bad gas cap. So, I assumed my gas cap was bad again, and cleared the P0162 and P0061 codes with my basic ELM327 reader and the free Torque app on my old Samsung Galaxy S8.

Well, that lasted a week and the CEL came on again today. Same codes but this time I believed them. It appears that my XJ has been running rich, as the inside of my exhaust tips are black with soot and my mpg has dropped. Other than that, it runs great.

I researched the Forums and found that Jaguar Land Rover North America has extended the O2 Sensor warranty. See this important thread from the F-type Forum for details.

I have an appointment with my Jaguar dealer after Christmas to address this CEL under the JLRNA extended warranty. I never received the above letter.

I dropped my 2013 XJ off at my JLR dealer this morning for the O2 Sensor extended warranty repair and was pleasantly surprised by my service loaner car - a 2023 Range Rover Evoque with 600 miles and all the bells and whistles. I am embarrassed to tell you that I had to read the Owner's Handbook to figure out how to shift it into reverse, as it doesn't have the pop-up hockey puck shifter and it isn't intuitive (or maybe it is and I'm just slow). The service writer simply handed me the key and said he'd call me when it's ready, probably in 2 or 3 days.

It's definitely not an XJ, but it exceeded my expectations for a loaner.

I thought a pretty cool feature was the flush mounted door handles that pop out when unlocked and are ready to pull to open the door. Makes for a smoother ride and better fuel economy. Not.

Ain't progress great?

Yes those are real similar to the F-Type door handles.

Rats. My dealer showed me that my 2013 XJ was placed in service on December 20, 2012 and didn't qualify for this extended warranty. JLRNA refused to help, with no customer goodwill participation, notwithstanding only 46,708 miles and owning two Jaguars. I've never heard of an oxygen sensor going bad with under 70K miles.

Dealer invoiced me their List Price of $389.35 for one O2 sensor, part no. T2R54607. I don't know where they got that price, but other Jaguar dealers show the MSRP as $277.29.

My dealer gave me a 20% Military discount of $77.87, bringing the cost of that sensor to $311. 48. That's still more than the $277.29 MSRP. The charge for "Shop Supplies" was $33.99.

The technician's time was not specified. I was charged $399.88 less a 20% Military discount of $79.98, for a net cost of $319.90.

My invoice totaled $698.18. They had my XJ for four days.

I'm bringing this to your attention because it's why so many Forum members negatively describe their dealer experiences.

Go back and claim your money back: its well known fact that Jaguar change the Model Year on summer previous year, (Model year 2013 have been coming out from factory line summer 2012) and its nothing to do about when the vehicle are taken in service or registered in use. (letter clearly states Model year) If they try to sneak out it, ask how they handle Takata airbacks; By registration date or manufacturing dataes? (Vehicle manufacturers are resposible to fix Takata airbacks by law)

@Vasara, you're in Finland and need to understand the difference between a recall and a warranty extension as defined in the USA. Note that the Takata airbags are subject to a recall that was mandated by various government agencies around the world due to public safety, regardless of mileage or the age of the vehicle. This O2 Sensor Warranty Extension is not a recall, and extends the original factory warranty based on the date the vehicle was first placed in service to "10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first". My XJ was placed in service on December 20, 2012, when it was purchased by the first owner. Although my XJ had only 46,708 miles when I took it to my dealer to be repaired, it was beyond the "10 years" limit for this extended warranty.

As explained above, JLR North America refused to provide any customer accommodation whatsoever for cost of this repair.

My gripe isn't with JLR North America. They lost any future business from me. My gripe is with my dealer, who charged me more than the factory MSRP so he could give me a discount. IMHO, that's an unethical business practice and theft by deception.

Know that I'm just getting started with that dealer.

Hi Stuart,
I did not mix the recall vs extended warranty. Read my post again. I just give you a hint how to react if they claim that the registration date will set the date, what are clearly descripted as model year. Its total bul*hit to claim that factory given extended warranty starts when the vehicle are registerd.
Back in days the dealers try this kind of nosense on many cases here on our local market too, but EU have very strong consumer protection and now days even manufacturers put dealers on row, so the reputation will not suffer for upsetting customers for minor(!) repairs. (i am highly surprised to hear that dealer in Atlanta would be sneaky as that for few hundred bucks) Here big issues are then another story: Lots of law cases went thru with VAG engines and DSG:s, but we did not had so high returns for diesel gate as US users. Currently oilbath belts have been risen up when dealers have not been followed manufacturers oil guides and engines fail even serviced on dealers.
Back in your case: Since its manufacturer given extended warranty: 1st of all: Its not dealer desission. 2nd: Dealer will get refund from factory for the changed O2 sensor, so now they get your money plus get refund from JLR.
Keep pushing, good luck.

EDIT: Ohh.. Crap. I just read the end of the JLR letter where notes that it covers for 10 years. By that your vehicle are outside of this period, however: Like you wrote you can questionare why you have not been received this letter?

I'm less concerned about my eligibility for coverage under this extended warranty (by its terms I'm past the eligibility date) than my dealer who appears to have charged me more than the MSRP for parts.

I've cooled down and thought about this and decided that it's not worth my time to pursue this with my dealer. They overcharged me $122.59 for that part ($399.88 - 277.29), and that's the last penny they'll ever get from me. That's good enough for me.

And my XJ is running great, with no CEL.
