Clunk when going into drive or reverse very intermittent
All:
Anyone get a "clunk" noise going into drive or reverse intermittently. It's like nails on a chalk board for me to hear it. Yet every time I mention it to my dealer the response is "it has a lot of moving parts, it's not uncommon". It worries me however.
By the way I always come to a complete stop when shifting. Come to think of it...it tends to happen not while say doing a 3 point turn or parallel parking but that initial start-up, and reverse, or start-up and forward. Very intermittent which is bothering me.
Is this normal? Anyone else?

My xkr 2010, used ti do that clunk, in reverse in movement, now my xj 2015 do the same noise only more low. I think its because of the brake pads very large in the 20 inches , so the pads move with the reverse

Think i know the "clunk" you're talking about, happens to me from time to time.
I only experience it when i had parked and didn't pull the park brake on BEFORE either taking my foot off the brake or switching the dial to park, oh and also happens when i parked downhill.
So basically from now on,
I stop, pull park brake, turn from D to P, then take my foot off the brake.
Hope that helps
That might explain why it's so intermittent. I'm going to give that a try as well. Thanks for the feedback. I was worried it was the tranny.

2 weeks ago, I heard a big 'CLUNK' when put in reverse after the car was parked for 3 weeks. It drove fine after that. It's disconcerting but appears to be normal. Mechanically, I have no idea what was going on, maybe those of you gearheads can explain.
Today when I was parking I remembered this thread.
I turned off the radio and had the roof open, when I entered the garage and put the car in reverse - it made a "click" ( soft, but audible ).
Was a tight spot, had to use 3 or 4 times reverse, but it only did the "click" once.
Go figure
