Default considering a 2013 XJ Portfolio with knock sensor issue

Hi,

I'm considering buying a 2013 Jaguar XJ Portfolio with 101,000 miles. The car currently has a check engine light on and is in "restricted performance" mode due to a faulty knock sensor. The current owner had it inspected by a mechanic, who quoted $1,900 for the repair. If I go through with the purchase, I plan to do the work myself.

While I'm not new to Jaguars—having owned an X308 and an X350 (which I had for eight years until just recently)—this would be my first experience with the X351.

I inspected the car today and pulled the diagnostic codes. In addition to the knock sensor issue, there are several other codes that may indicate further problems. Cosmetically, the vehicle is in good condition, though it needs a replacement center console faceplate and a new start/stop ignition button. Everything else looks solid.

The engine doesn't start immediately—it takes about 3–4 seconds of cranking. I was told this behavior began after the knock sensor issue. Once running, it sounds fine,

Below is the list of codes I retrieved. What are your thoughts? Do you see signs of more serious underlying problems?

P007B - Charge air cooler temperature sensor circuit range/performance - Bank 1 (repeated twice)

P0111 - Intake air temperature sensor 1 - circuit range/performance

P0442 - Evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak)

P0335 - Crankshaft position sensor A circuit

P2066 - Fuel level sensor B - circuit range/performance

P026A - Charge air cooler efficiency - Below threshold

U0447 - Invalid data received from gateway A

P0234 - Knock control system error

P0456 - Evaporative emission system leak detected (very small leak)

Thanks,
-mo

Some of the DTCs may be caused by a failing or weak battery.

Charge air cooler codes are indicative of a failed intercooler pump, a common problem. A Bosch 010 or ZZP intercooler pump is nearly a direct bolt in replacement with a bit of wiring harness work.

Keep in mind to replace the knock sensors you need to remove the supercharger. While you're there you might as well replace the valve cover gaskets and the plastic cooling system components as these will fail eventually also. You're looking at over $1200 in parts to do all of this already.

That car is worth very little. Not sure I would even offer $5K.

Thanks for the feedback. Will keep them in mind while contemplating and making my decision.
