Question F-type muffler installed on XJ - is this possible?

Hi guys,

I have a question for the guys that may know:

I have an 2011 XJ base and I would love to install an F-Type muffler on it.

I totally love the f-type mufflers sound and I was wondering if this job can be possible?

The jag dealership guys did not provided me an answer.

Thanks in advance!

No chance without major and very expensive modifications.
The XJ has a pair of "outboard" mufflers while the F-Type muffler (both the V8 and the V6 version) is a large central east-west type.

Hi OzXFR,

Thank you for your advice. Do you recommend any exhaust tune up that may sound close to the F-Type or something nice and it is easy to install on an 2011 XJ?

Thanks again!

I don't think you will ever find anything for an XJ which is close to the F-Type sound.
Not only are the mufflers completely different but the F-Type has valves which close to mute the noise a bit (the default position is open), and software/tuning which dumps unburnt fuel into the exhaust which then ignites to give the distinct crackles and pops on the over-run.
The closest you will get is a pair of Varex mufflers which have an electronic switch to go from loud to quiet and vice versa, and in the loud mode which is near as dammit to straight through you will get a fair amount of crackles and pops on the over-run.
I put straight through free-flow mufflers on my old XFR and the crackles and pops on the over-run went from rare and mild to always and quite loud, but the price was too much noise, resonance and drone especially under 1/3 throttle going up a hill.

Martini,

Without knowing your budget, it's hard to make any recommendations about modifying your exhaust system. I suggest that you check with a local custom exhaust (hot rod) shop for their recommendations. Or consider the Mina exhaust system: Jaguar XJ & XJL Performance Exhaust System by Mina Gallery - Mina Gallery Inc

Whatever you decide to do, be sure to retain all of the OEM parts so you can convert it back to factory stock. You'll have a hard time selling an XJ that sounds like it needs new mufflers.

If you are trying to re-create F-type sound, it will require more than just muffler mods. Pops and cracks are ECU dumping excess fuel and it detonating in exhaust. So even if you somehow manage to shoehorn single central muffler and valved bypass system into XJ, you will still have to add ECU code to get it sound that way.

Not sure what it sounds like on the XJ. But I have the XF with the 5L V8 (supercharged) and put on the Mina setup a couple of years ago. It's terrific - great growl, some crackles and pops on downshifting, and doesn't drone. Loud enough to be fun but not obnoxious

It's also simple bolt on, bolt off so easy to put back the original ones

Mina used to offer a discount to forum members too

What about the SVR mufflers? Aren't they a dual setup? Although they're prohibitively expensive...

Nup, the SVR muffler is just a slightly modified version of the R muffler, mainly different material (Alconnel?? - spelling??) and different tips, titanium I think.
