Correct: The shocks donīt have height sensors inside. Only height sensors are in suspension arms, all of them. Rear suspension are level correcting air-suspension type. The system reads level from each corner and ride height and angle (for front lights) are adjusted by rear suspension.
Shocks are active damping type and the wiring for shocks are for the contolling of the damping. Active damping system uses multible sensors from vehicle, including accelerometers, steering, engine, brakes... ~25 different values.

Kernt, Ive just replaced the height sensor (the one connecting to the control arm and frame) and both the suspension fault and active dynamics fault are gone. Drove the car around 15 mins and everything seems fine.
However, note that the sensor is different for older years XJ (I think pre 2014). And theres specific left and right side height sensors.
Yes, but not the Jaguar part number. Maybe MS333 can post what the part number is for the OEM.
I decided to go with this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/404207792639
Can't beat the price, plus free shipping and returns. I confirmed with the seller that the part can be used either left or right side. He even checked my VIN to be sure the sensor is correct for my 2013 XJL. I just wish it was made in the USA but hey, even the Jaguar OEM parts aren't. And if is doesn't fit or work...back it goes and then I'll have to pony-up for the OEM part.
Tom
is the connecting part of your sensor black colour?
I believe theres one with a different color (light grayish) with different number of pins at the connecting part (I think its a different part number) The first workshop I went gotten it from a scrapped car and realized its different from mine.
maybe the wrong part was from a AWD XJ.
realized my rear suspensions now sit slightly higher than before, and dont seem to deflate / adjust down by themselves.
after a night of parking, when I open the door / start the engine, no compressor sound and they dont inflate either. Seems as though they are stuck at the same height all the way.
any input on this? Is it just recalibration issue? The sensor was replaced without the battery being disconnected.
No help but with this generation XJ the air compressor is now in the trunk instead of behind the front bumper. So I can't ever hear the compressor anymore on these X351's.
Maybe try not starting the engine but turn the power on and see if you hear it?

On x351 the compressor do not pressurise the air-springs directly. Compressor fill up the resevoir located to the trunk. The compressor are not turned On at all when parked, unless the pressure on resevoir turn very low. It will start after speed goes over 20kmh (15mil) to keep passenger compartment quiet. (this is written on repair & service manual)
For height: Absolute sure each sensor do not have exactly same values (at least sensors of this pricerenge) and there must be some tolerences for the mounting srews, so it is fact that you have to calibrate the rideheight after chancing a sensor.
I'm confused - are you folks talking about the ride height sensor (the little articulating arm) that attaches between the frame and the control arm? Or are you talking about the active dampening control of the front shock absorber (what the wires on top of the shock are for)?
Mark,
The part is the ride height sensor (the little articulating arm) that attaches between the frame and the control arm. I got mine delivered and will try to install it this weekend. Have you replaced one of these? Do I access it by removing the tight front tire and plastic wheel well cover or from underneath? I assume that if that manner, I'll need to remove the plastic panel under the engine. I could not see the part just with a casual look. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
just a final update of the issue as I had been travelling.
Somehow when the workshop tried to recalibrate my suspension height with their software (non SDD), the active dynamics fault was triggered. Sent my car to a Jag specialist and there were multiple error codes and the suspension height can't be calibrated as they can't erase the fault! The 2 key error codes were angle sensor fault and the PSCM module showing initial configuration not completed. Wanted to charge me $500 just for diagnostics service as they claimed that need to check all the wiring even though I highlighted the issue was probably caused by the previous shop accidentally messed up the settings when they tried to recalibrate the suspension (as everything was ok prior).
Called up the previous workshop boss who's a renowned tuner in my country with good technical knowledge and explained the situation to him. He thinks it's just the PSCM module configuration not completed which leads to the steering angle sensor being turned off after looking at the list of fault codes that I've sent him. So I brought my car back to the previous workshop and had the boss personally handled my issue. And true to his advice, he got it resolved and reset the settings. The active dynamics fault was cleared, along with all the other multiple minor error codes which initially surfaced on the OBD scanner.
Thereafter I sent the car to another Jag specialist to recalibrate the suspension height and finally everything is perfect now.

Hey Tom did you find out about the height sensor & did you find where it was located at. I have the same problem the left front height sensor and was trying to see if you was successful on getting more info and did you get it changed out. Thanks Jake
Jake,
Yes...piece of cake. Remove the wheel, easy access to the sensor. I bought a new sensor off ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/404207792639) for $38 fits either left or right. fast shipping.

Tom Ok cool thanks you very much. So it's right behind the front tire. Did you have to reset it once you put it on or did it automatically do it once you connected it and jacked the car back down. The shop wanted to charge me $577.00 to replace it said it had to be programed once it was put on.
I did not need to recalibrate the height sensors. The routine can be done with SDD. After the install I took the car for a short ride, fault light was off, and the height was, and continues to be fine, no fault light. YMMV

Tom did your driver front ride height sensor have 6 pin plug in or 3 pin plug in. My old one has 6 pin plug in & the new one has 3 pin plug in. Help
