Default Jaguar XJ (X351) 3.0 Diesel Reliability and Maintenece

Hi people.

I've recently started flirting with the idea of the Jaguar XJ (X351), as this was my childhood dream and has been one of my most wanted cars for years. Now, mind you, I'm a young feller. At the current, I drive a Peugeot 407 1.6 HDi, and albeit it has been very reliable and very dependable to me, it is very long in the tooth and its 180,000 miles on the odometer aren't very reassuring to me, especially since I intend on travelling (as a tourist, not for work) a lot more with my 4-wheeler.

Now, the Jag XJ seems to have everything I want: Great levels of comfort, a fantastic interior, an engaging drive, and, above all else, it is a large saloon! What's not to like?

Now, as mentioned previously, I am an owner of a 20-year old Peugeot, so I really don't know what to expect from an XJ in terms of maintenance and repair costs, nor do I have an idea of its general reliability. Could somebody please compare these two, or, if that isn't possible, could you compare the XJ with an F10 5-Series Bimmer, a C7 A6, or a W212 E-Class, because these cars are plentiful on the roads here and I know more-or-less how much they cost to maintain.

I know that the 3.0 has been known for breaking the crank, however the 3.0 and 5.0 Supercharged, as much as I'd want one those, make very little sense to me as, for one, it drinks petrol like crazy, and furthermore I would have very little options for servicing those engines, as I do live in Serbia, and JLR isn't that popular here.

The 3.0 is basically the 3.0 HDi found in various Peugeots, so I would be able to find a reliable mechanic that would do it justice.

As for the mileage I'm looking for, I'm looking mostly at Jags that have done 150,000 through 250,000 kilometers.

A good thread here on the UK site (where we have a lot more diesels than petrols):

Also a good site to ask any diesel related questions. Petrol V6/V8 questions are better here since much more experience of the these engines Stateside.

I have 2010 3.0 Diesel X351 and i have now +320t km on the clock. (i used to have early 607 with 2.2l diesel long time ago)
As long as you change the engine oils about every 10k km and use only low ash oils (C1) you should be good for high mileage. X351 is mostly build by OEM parts (brakes, wishbones, powertrain, electrics, so its much better than its reputation and by my experience with less issues than 7-series BMW, S-Class or A8 of same era. This of course that vehicle is taken care, like any other vehicle.
Yes, the 3.0 V6 diesel are same than PSA, but taken out much more power, because front wheel driven models did not had any beefy enough transmission available. On rear wheel driven this is not an issue and higher output is not an issue. Some cases the short journeys can cause long or unfinished DPF burnings, but there are one trick to make situation better. (this issue donīt exist on front wheel driven vehicles, only rear wheel driven)

I have an alternative suggestion, if you would consider something American - Cadillac CT5V Blackwing. I don't think it will give the same sort of status signals as an XJ, but the drive might be pretty comparable.

A Panamera of some form might also be worth considering, if you are OK with the looks.
