The Jaguar XJL is traditional English luxury with sexy catlike curves.
People to this day are confused as to what this car is. My car is de-badged and I can't tell you how many times people have walked up to look at the Leaper on my trunk.
Can a car be dated when it is virtually unrecognizable to the masses?
I still get a lot of admiring. The XJL is such a rare sight that is not getting jaded or aged as other, higher production models do as people get used to seeing a bunch of those.
What is definitely ageing is the electronics. My '15 Stingray and even my 2013 Chrysler minivan has arguably more modern infotainment systems.

Personally,I think the XJL makes Mercedes's S-class, Lexus LS, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 all look "old fashioned". Only the Maserati Quattroporte is in the same league, style wise.
Of course I don't appreciate the current 3.0 L, supercharged V-6 340 HP as the "workhorse" engine. since it it only can scoot the XJL from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds, whereas the former 5.0 L , 385 HP V-8 base engine provided 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, a giant step backward for a luxury performance car!
What happened to the bragging rights of having a 32 valve V-8 engine?
A V-6? How pedestrian!

Nice
Glad to see all that power not going to waste. As someone who got the fastest version of the XJ, I doubt you would complain about the 0-60 times on the base version. TC

Thanks the second photo was at an event called WannaGoFast that's held at a private airstrip in the North Georgia mountains. it's a 1/2 mile run and they get your top speed at the end. My best run last September was 141+, not bad for a "stock" sedan!
I would not say it is a giant step back, only people who care about .5 second difference from 0-60 are not the ones who will be getting the base version of any car. I personally dont see many XJs at the track but if I did I would not expect base models. If you were to talk about cars built for speed like Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes, then I would agree that 0-60 times are important and that is why newer versions of those cars just get faster and faster, leaving the past generations for the high school kids who coincidentally care quite a bit about bragging rights.
. Only kidding, of course.Seriously, a V-8 over a V-6, is like real wood trim over simulated trim, real leather over vinyl, or Grey Poupon over French's yellow mustard. It is just something one expects in a true luxury sedan today.
I also have a Mustang and a Corvette, but when in my Jaguar, I don't want to be inferior to other luxury sedans, either in performance or bragging rights.
One either smells real leather and wood and hears the growl of an honest-to-God V-8, or not. Make-believe compromise is simply not acceptable. Go first class or not at all.
