Default Keep or Trade In...?

Our beloved 2019 XJ is now 6 yrs old, with 34K miles.
Out of warranty & 5 yr annual maintenance over with.
Been running flawlessly with no issues, but we're worried about possible future mechanical & maintenance issues.
So either keeping her forever, or start looking around for possible great deal on a new 2025 luxury SUV.
Thoughts...?

Since there isn't high demand for used X351s, the value you get if you decide to exchange it as part of the purchase of a new vehicle may surprise you. Given this reality, it may be best to have the gearbox serviced by a Jaguar specialist, and replace the plastic cooling system pipes under the supercharger snout along with the plastic heater pipe between the back of the cylinder heads with the aluminium versions.

I am in the same boat with similar mileage, but I just DIY'ed the full fluid changes (transmission, differential, brake fluid, engine oil and coolant) changed both belts, new water pump, and new pulleys and tensioners, changed to ceramic brake pads for no brake dust, and most importantly, switched to waterless coolant to avoid any cooling system issues that would kill the engine. I am ready for the long haul now.

You could get an extended warranty, if that makes you sleep better at night.

I haven't found many cars can compare to the XJ in terms of the quality of interior materials. Try finding a piece of real polished stainless or real wood veneer in any luxury SUV today south of a Bentayga. All the buttons and knobs have been replaced with touchscreens.
Sitting in the XJ with its acres of leather and wood is like sitting in a gentleman's club. Sitting in a new Mercedes with all its gaudy LEDs is like sitting in a strip club.

Not to mention a lot of new luxury SUVs are suffering from serious drivetrain reliability concerns. The V8s used in the large GM SUVs, Escalades etc are dropping like flies. Same for the Toyota turbo mills.

NavyBlue, if you love your XJ, as most of us do, and I detect a some emotional attachment, then definitely keep it. You know the car, it's comfortable, everything works, and it retains it's prestige regardless of age. Yes, it will require some maintenance as time goes on but since you do read this forum, you must know with a very high probability what to expect. You will know, if you don't already, what the notorious failure items are. So, in time, perform the preventative maintenance on those items and keep it. Yes, you will have to manage your own auto maintenance rather than rely on a scheduled warranty but, like the rest of us, you can do it if you love that XJ. 34K miles is still a very young car. I'm sure there are forum members that would love to scoop up your cherry XJ. My 2 cents.

Keep it. Invest a little to ensure long term survivability (cast coolant pipes, tranny fluid service, brake fluid change, etc). LIke others have said, the quality of the current cars on the market is questionable at best and you will save a lot of money over the years, even factorying in additonal problems. I have just over 100K miles on my XJ and it is running strong. I am looking to get 250K+ miles out of mine. For you, that would be close to forever. Enjoy what you have.

When you are trying to determine the best car to drive, I think it really boils down to the repair-maintenance expense versus the value of new tech.
You are probably all familiar with a recent post entitled "Darkest day" from @tonyman121. He apparently loved that car, and the overall Jag experience. (He even has an F-Type!)
On Father's Day this year I lost my 2016 XJ AWD (my blackberry beauty), when the villain crossed two lanes of opposing traffic to administer her coup de grâce.
Essentially the same level of damage as tonyman's 2013. I ran the calculations comparing the insurance max repair allowance versus using the settlement and buying the salvage. Except for paint, I was confident performing my own repairs. But in the end I took the cash to begin the search for the best car to drive.
I prefer a 4 dr luxury sedan with power, and the ability to turn a corner. I want to be the mechanic and will only choose a model with a reputation for high mileage. I love the Italian cars, and loath the German and Korean. However, I struggle to find an Italian odometer beyond 60k with its original drive train. I started comparing the Lincoln Continental with the Cadillac CT6, Infiniti Q50-60 and the Lexus LS. My target was low mileage 2019-2022. The Japanese cars had more tech, but nothing exciting. And then I realized I was comparing every spec and test drive to the XJ.
I scoured the internet and examined approx 200 cars, 2016-2019. There are plenty of XJ Sports for sale, and I was surprised by how many XJ 3L without AWD. But I only found 1/2 doz samples of the XJL AWD and 5L with less than 30k. They were generally priced from $35 - $45. I missed the bid window on a 2019 AWD with 3k. I settled on a 2019 XJ50 5L with 26k miles for $40k. I bought it based on approx 40 internet images, with a 100 day full mechanical warranty, and had it delivered,. (I lived in Las Vegas for 6 years, so I have training as a gambler.) The maintenance records were marginal, but the CarFax and AutoCheck were clean.
RESULTS: It has rear buckets with massage, elec rear door shades, tray tables and two 10.2 screens in the seat backs. The body is straight, the paint is good, and upholstery clean with minor wear. It had two bent wheels, a ravaged spare, mixed tire brands on front and back, a lead-acid battery, and a can of coke had been sprayed across the dash and center console controls. The purchase warranty is replacing the wheels and the dealer replaced an O2 sensor, exhaust hanger, and updated the software on Jag's warranty. I disassembled-cleaned-repaired the dash-console, and replaced the battery. The 26 pieces of the tambour doors next to the gear selector were scattered and had to be re-manufactured. I also purchased 4 new ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires (for Seattle rain).
I haven't had a chance to drive it much, but just going through the repairs is part of the experience. I had started collecting alum cooling parts for the 2016, and those will be installed soon. Regardless, I still think I made the best choice of selecting a car that I want to drive. My advice to @NavyBlue is don't measure your XJ against an SUV, but be resolute in the characteristics of a vehicle that you want to drive and plan on preventative maintenance. Or maybe a 575 F-Pace?
Black was not my first choice (hard to keep clean), but will suffice.

It's your choice of course.
I remember when you got it, and unless you've lost the feeling you had for it then, it's an easy answer.
The resale value isn't always the same as the value to an owner.
And maintenance/repair rarely will be as much as the purchase of a newer replacement.
Personally I've paid more for pout-of-pocket repair on my 2012 Range Rover than it's worth.
And I would certainly pay out-of-pocket to repair the XJ when it needs it, regardless of insurance decisions.
When the front left fender & wheel were damaged last year I was preparing to have it repaired out of pocket and didn't plan on opening a claim on our insurance, but fortunately the person tat hit us had insurance, so their insurance paid for it.

Cars are emotional things, we either love them or we hate the very ore that they were made from. I truly hated my wife's BMW M3, and would have gladly smashed in into a cube given the chance.

At one point I swore that I would be buried in my XKR, then someone offered me a really stupidly high amount of money, and I sold her.

When I bought the 575, my wife told me "You better get rid of that old one, like now!" She was talking about my 2012 5.0 XJ that is still sat in the garage 5 years later, well it's a different garage, but you get the point.

I'm replacing my wife's F-Pace with a Genesis GV-70 next week (Tuesday). If I'm honest, the F-Pace has been a great car....but I never loved it.

2012 5.0 N/A vs 2018 575. Where do you start!

I use the '12 as my daily driver, and love it. Each, and every time I drive the 575, I realize that my wife is correct and that I am stupid....but I love that car!!!

The basic point is, if you don't love the car: Sell it.
If you want to trade for something, but newer $$$$$

An "extended warranty" is a bad idea. Why? See my Post #6 in this 2021 thread.

Maybe the OP is loaded and not living paycheck to paycheck, and maybe he can make responsible financial decisions on his own when deciding to buy a new car.

I used to get extended warranties when I didn't have enough money to weather a catastrophic repair bill nor enough DIY knowledge to prevent and fix problems on my own. I have bought several extended warranties direct from the Jaguar and the Land Rover dealers as part of a used car purchase and they paid out easily on repairs. Some of the aftermarket warranties made me work hard to get the work approved and the bill paid, but they all did it in the end.

They aren't all rip offs, but it's obvious, like everything, you have to check the reviews and know what your buying before you paid for it. They are no different than your house, car, or medical insurances. Those insurances are also in business to make a profit and the repair companies are in the business to rip off the insurance companies. The consumers will always be caught in the middle but we still need them.

So we've been looking around at several dealerships & saw some pretty nice vehicles. They all wanted to only give us around 24K for my 2019 XJ with only 34K miles, which I thought was a total insult.
Doesn't make sense to pay/owe $40K to trade in our beloved XJ for another lesser (although newer) vehicle.
Although this XJ is a little dated with some wear & tear, it's a fully loaded beauty that still drives wonderfully.
Can't seem to part with cooled massage seats, ceramic window tint, ceramic paint coating, loads of room, etc.
At least we did our due diligence of looking around for alternatives, so I guess we'll keep her for the long haul, since we already have the best car in the world, which is called: "Paid Off"...
