A quick question for those in the know. Does 15 or so hours of labor sound high to change out the rear coolant crossover and water pump, or is it just me? It's on my 2011 XJL Supersport.
15 hours does sound high for that job. When I did mine (2012 XF Supercharged - same engine), I took about 10 hours taking it pretty easy. The supercharger has to come off on the XF but the XJ has a bit more room at the rear of the engine so better access. Parts prices look to be high too. I got mine for about 65% of those prices. Total for parts including all the plastic pipes around the engine except for the thermostat housing was around $550.
I notice that they didn't include any supercharger gaskets so they must have done the job with the supercharger in place. Seems very pricey.
10 hours was what I was thinking. It was from a dealership here in the DC area so prices are naturally a bit higher. Makes me miss Texas that much more lol. Guess I'll stop being lazy and do it myself.
The dealer is very expensive. as an example the pipe-heater has a msrp of $119.25. There was a time I was an extended warranty adjuster. I would always ask the parts department weather their prices were Jaguar msrp or dealer msrp as dealer are known to inflate parts prices beyond msrp. One way to get the prices from a dealer on the internet like https://www.jaguarpartsunlimited.com/ (i.e. Exciter Jaguar in New Hampshire) and ask the dealer if they will price match. My dealer in Atlanta does. you just need to provide a printout of the parts from the online dealer before authorizing repairs. Lastly the times they are quoting you are high as several of the operations are overlapping. For example Jaguar in a TSB (JTB00566) to replace the upper and lower plastic coolant hoses, that includes R&R of the supercharger the time allowed is 4.5 hours. IMHO R&R of the water pump (4.8)and thermostat/pipe assembly (4.4) could add 3 hours as they, at that point bolt off bolt on and the rear pipe might add an hour as everything is already disassembled. So 10 to 12 hours would be fair and competitive parts pricing could save you over $1000. Also make sure that they repair all the early plastic pieces as is mentioned in the preceding TSB as they are known to become brittle and fail.
I had the pump, thermostat, cross over pipe and ALL the other bits updated to the latest spec by Steve at my San Diego Independent JLR specialist in May this year (2019). I noticed a coolant smell, then I got a low coolant caption.
