Default Looking into getting an x351 sc. Current x350 x100 owner

Hey all,

im looking at a supercharged 2012 portfolio xj. Now from my understanding the non xjr supercharged vehicles make less hp of the similar year.

Is this the case with the portfolio? If so what makes the hp difference? Is it tune? Boost? Exhaust? Or something internal to the engine like compression or cam specs?

mas much as intel myself I’ll leave the car alone I know that won’t happen and if there is some sort of significant engine difference I’d likely just wait and get into an xjr.

help?

Damon

The Supercharged V8 is 470hp and the Naturally Aspirated (NA) is 395hp as best I can remember. The SuperSport and Ultimate are 510hp. The XJR was 550 in 2014 - 2017 then in 2018 - 2019 575ph.

Interesting. I am really curious what the changes in the 5.0 sc model over the years made that extra hp. Thanks

From what I have seen the engine has been able to generate 600hp from the beginning and the designated hp ratings are done through the tune set into the ECM. As for the 2018 and 2019 Model Years the Transmission version was updated to handle more than 516 pounds of torque that the 575hp engine can generate. IMHO the reason Jaguar never offered more than 575hp was for reliability.

Mr SlowPoke, the XJR is nice but not really needed when the XJSC is available. You want the 2013 plus cars to get the ECU that will unlock all that sweet XJR power, you also want the 8 speed. But 2013s down they have the poor design tensioners, stick with 2014.5 plus to not worry about timing chain tensioner issues for a bit.

The other hardware ( heads and bottom end) is the same on all XJSC 5.0s.

2012 XJSC are kinda stuck to the advertised HP, tuners don’t get substancial gains to make it worth tuning. If you leave it stock then they are great bargains. Most early XJSC are Long wheel base, the long wheel base became less popular by 2015, and you will find more SWB XJSCs there.

But Turbo Coupes are cool too stick with those.

I wasn't aware that there was any difference in any of the AJ113 SC engines regarding tuning. I've seen people tuning their 2011s on there, 2010 XFRs, etc.. am I wrong?

That is NOT true. Ask VAP - they can and do tune ALL years of the 5.0L SC V-8's.
I have an 2014 XJR and it does have many things the other lower levels do not BUT the most important stuff is all there on the SC models. SO that is the sweet spot for money/performance.
They are very cheap on the used market and are a performance bargain!

I would recommend the 8 speed and the latest year you can afford but you will not be disappointed at all with the 6 speed and the 5.0L SC V-8!!

The 6 speeds can be tuned but they have a different ECU that don’t net big HP increases. The 8 speed cars 2013+ are the ones that provide the largest gains. Not worth getting into a 6 speed if you are planning on tuning when you will be way ahead of the game with an 8speed tune. Matter a fact I think VAP doesn’t even show the 6 speed tunes in the website anymore it’s all 2013+. If you are leaving the 6speed stock it’s a great deal. I’m a speed freak and have had no need to tune my 2013 and I had every intention to. But its just not really needed for my use 470hp is plenty right now.

I don’t disagree with you but the Denso ECU 2010-2012 tunes are mediocre in comparison to the Bosch ECU 2013+ tunes. They advertise a mere crank 60hp with the SC pulley, the pulley doing most of the work, for the money it’s ok but you will gain more from the Bosch tunes.

I know the OP personally and he would shoot himself on the foot getting a 2012 with his itch for HP. His x308 XJR and XKR has more mods than the market offers for the X351.

Yes you are right. The 2013+ would be my recommendation too.
