Default OEM tune upgrade?

This may have been asked before, but can't seem to find the answer here. I am possibly pulling the string on a 2011 XJL supercharged. I know the supercharged XJ has 470 HP and the R has 510 hp with the supercharged version being nothing more than a de-tuned R. Is it possible to have the dealership reprogram the supercharged car with the R tune?

I am pondering my options right now and would love to get the supercharged XJL, tweak it a little bit and get it to be bumping against 600 hp. I know I need to do more than just the tune, but it would be 1 of the steps I would be looking at.

The R didn't exist in 2011. For 2011, there was the 470 hp supercharged and the 510 hp supersport. I think there was a thread about 6 months ago with a tuner trying to find someone willing to try loading the supersport tune on the supercharged, but I don't think he found anyone willing.

I can't remember when Jaguar switched to the 8-speed automatic (2012 or 2013) but when they did, they switched ECU suppliers also, so tunes for later models are incompatible with earlier (2011/2012) models so it would be impossible to load an 2014 XJR tune (550hp) into a 2011.

To make things even more confusing, the UK never had a 470 hp model. Instead, they only got the 510 hp model which was labeled as the supercharged model (not supersport).

Geek, guess I will have to talk with my local dealerships and see if any of them are willing to do what I am after.

I will keep the ECU change in mind too. That is good information to have when comparing XJ's as this might affect what i have planned for the car.

From what I am told all supercharged engines are the same. The HP is controlled by the settings in the ECU and when a dealer hooks up a car to their computer system that is continually updated with settings for all the onboard electronics they have to input the VIN to get the electronics to talk to one another and then the car can be updated, but the VIN locks the engine settings. A dealer would have to tell their computer a different VIN for a 510hp model to get that to load and "unlock" the engine to 510hp. I seriously doubt a dealer would jeopardies their franchise by doing this. As for after market, a company ECU Tuning Group had done several XJs and you may want to check them out.

It can and has been done. For the 2010-2012 (denso) you flash it with the XKR-S denso map. 2013-up (bosch) is a bit harder to flash, but still possible. You'll flash it with a bosch xjr, xfrs, xkrs map.

Along this line, could you do an independent re-flash to the ECM of a N/A engine car, to drop the speed limiter? I was talking to my dealer, who is rather "hip", and he said that "Yes, it can be done with a factory program, but you'd need an Act of Congress (Parliament?) to get the authorization to do it"....

Did you mean by a dealer (which i would imagine is highly unlikely) or an independent shop? If independent, who has the capability to do this?

Dealer tool, Yes. You can use the sdd to flash it. It's not as simple as plugging it in and flashing it though.

Well all, I talked to my local dealership and while they are willing to install the tune, they said that it would most likely null and void any warrantee that would be left on the car. Seems a bit interesting since they would be putting the upgraded tune into the same model car with the same engine and warranteeing that. C'est la vie.

On a high end, technically complicated car like a Jaguar, with high cost parts and labor rates you might want to think twice about voiding the factory warranties.
Trying to beat the system against a big corporation is a fool's pursuit, since they are staffed by many very competent lawyers backed with enormous financial resources to drive you, or any other individual challenging them, into the ground. Just saying.

I am going to do it as soon as the warranty is over.

For those interested in this, I was talking with some of the design guys for Jaguar last night and we were talking tech and the XJR tune is a bit more than just the ECU. You would also need to get the Mina Gallery upgraded supercharger pulley. Between the two things, that will get you the full gain of the XJR tune. It is a little bit more than I was initially thinking. Thought I would pass on the info.
