Just a PSA for those with older XJs (Mine is a 2012), I caught a weird humming noise that originally I thought was the supercharger. I thought about this a little more, as it came on a few minutes after startup, and not right at startup. I then thought this might be belt noise, but after applying some water and dressing to key areas the noise did not reduce. I even thought - wow, is my alternator whining? Again, seemed unlikely.

I took this video to show what I found. PCV Breather hose had broken and collapsed on itself, and is not yet leaking so my performance hadn't been impacted. I can feel broken plastic.

The XF forum was helpful in identifying the part number. Photo shows the L bend where the tube has broken. The heat shield portion is really squishy and it should feel solid.

I thought those "L" shaped hoses were for the inter cooler lines?
Don't those contain coolant?

I suppose I haven't removed it to check, but I don't think so. The part number if you search it shows up in the EVAP emissions subsystem.

You might be thinking of those "tees" on the photo. The video shows where I'm talking about, the hose that runs next to the oil filter cap.

 

which engine do you have?

 

It's in my signature, but a 5.0 supercharged engine.
