Default Random door keys issue

One of my keys on a 2016 XJL has developed a life of it's own. The battery has been recently replaced.

The key locks reliably, but when the unlock button is pressed, the trunk opens and all the windows wind down, on just one press.

Additionally, occasionally the trunk will open randomly just when the key gets near the car.

Has anyone experienced this or does anyone know what may be happening here? Is there an issue with the KVM? Can it be replaced or repaired DIY, or is this a dealer-only issue?

Thanks,

M

Mongoose, it is sounding like one of the buttons on the keyfob is stuck depressed. Does this happen when the other keyfob is brought near the car with the first one kept away? If so, then I would be looking at things like the KVM. But, if it is only that one keyfob, i would be looking at that as the failed device.

I agree what Thermo wrote.
It can be also dirt / moisture on the area of keyfob printed circuid board where conduitive surface of rubber button is pressed. (... or did these have actual switches? Cant remember anymore)

Thanks for the suggestions. After those I am pretty convinced it is a keyfob issue. The buttons seem to be actuating well, and I ran some switch cleaner through them.

However they also seem to be performing random functions. For example sometimes the unlock button opens the trunk. The trunk button does nothing. The only consistent response is the "lock" button.

Having said that, passive unlock seems to work perfectly, so I am reasonably convinced it is the smart keyfob.

It seems like no-one around here programs 2016+ keyfobs, though. Is that a dealer only function now?

,Mongoosse,

Given your symptoms, and my experience, you left your key in your pocket and your wife put your pants through the laundry....Don't ask me how I know this!!

On newer models the keys are paired with the KVM (keyless vehicle module) and you cannot simply add a new key to an existing KVM, they need to be programmed together.
