With all of the "contact-less" options for retail sales nowadays, I thought it might be worth exploring the possibility of modifying my 2012 to enable closing the trunk from inside the vehicle. Theoretically, all I would need is a momentary push button switch and a pair of wires going to underneath the rear seat cushion. Do any of you know which wire colors correspond to the trunk lid switch located on the lip of the lid? With a little luck, those two wires run somewhere inside the rear of the car. With even more luck, they can be unbundled without removing the rear seat back. Has anyone explored this?

 

You don't need any of that it's already been done.

I just added this to my 2014 XJR. Now I can close it from inside the car and from the remote FOB.
Handy and should have come standard at this level of car!

This has been out for quite some time.
I found it a very easy install and did not think it was worth documenting.

Thank you Sir, I just ordered one. This is one of the most annoying drawbacks of owning this car.
On the 2016 and above you can't even close the trunk without having the remote within a foot of the trunk
Now, can I also use the remote app to close the trunk or am I simply asking for too much lol.

I've installed Jez's modules in my X351s. Easy to install, and works perfectly on two cars and the other one it requires two presses to open and one to close. (Unsure why it is different on that one, but it doesn't bother me.)

The main reason for me was not so much the remote closing as it was being able to close using the button on the rear bumper cover. When you have your hands full it is much easier to press that one with your thumb than the close button on the boot lid.

So you can now close the trunk 3 different ways. Inside button, Remote FOB button and the rear bumper mounted button.

Another happy owner/ user of one of jez's modules. I panicked when I was showing it off and it failed, which is how I discovered that it doesn't close the boot if the car is locked. I get the dreaded double-beep.

... but unlock the car and it works flawlessly. Many thanks to IanD for fitting it for me.

 

the inside button by the driver closes the trunk?! thats so strange...i thought i tried it the other day and it didnt work. will try again

 

On mine, with Jez's modules fitted, all the open buttons function as close buttons as long as the car being unlocked (as Chris has noted above).
That is:
- The fascia button near the driver knee
- The remote fob trunk button
- The silver button on the rear bumper cover

(On my XJR for some undiagnosed reason if the engine has been running and the ignition is then turned off, if I press any of those three open button just the once it unlatches the trunk but the powered struts do not lift the lid. If I press it a second time the struts then open the lid fully. If the car has just been locked and unlocked it opens on the first press. It is only that car that behaves that way - my 2010 and other 2016 both open fully on the first press every single time.)

I don't understand why the XJ didn't get this functionality from the factory given a fair number of them are used as limos. It is (was) a pita to have to go and press the close button on the trunk lid when luggage has been removed. It can't be a safety thing because the lid detects if it hits an obstacle and instantly retracts, and AFAIK all the other JLR models with powered struts have remote close enabled.

 

Ordered one as well.

Received the Trunk remote module and installed in 10 minutes.
1, Remove in trunk manual release by pushing plastic dowel out so release cable can be detached
2 Remove trunk lid lower hard panel (pull off down til plastic clips release and if needed soft panel if needed
3. Unplug the Green connector to the release buttin and the white connector to the trunk motor.
4. Plug in the module as directed hold in place with cable ties
and reassemble.
The thing works any of the switches and the remote ot open and close. A thing of beauty, Thanks Clubaith1




That was easy and solved a gripe I've had for almost 8 years

 

I would have got stuck at this point: because I had expert help he managed to fit the module without removing the trunk manual release handle: it looked for all the world like messing with that little plastic dowel would result in a breakage. Is this dowel easily removed/ replaced? Is there any glue involved?

I also had a 5:

5. Tie a bit of string around the trunk manual release and run it out of the trunk the first time you try the new gadget, just in case you didn't wire it right.

I was paranoid about closing the boot (trunk), in case incorrect fitment of the module stopping the "open" buttons from working. Needless worry, it turned out, but better safe than sorry.

 

The emergency trunk release handle and dowel are a glow in the dark plastic and i used a small screwdriver to push the dowel far enough to open the channel to allow the end of the release cable to slide out. After fitting the module I replaced the panel and the release cable was close to the opening that is needs to come through and I have some long small needle nose pliers and fished the cable out. Then reinserted the cable end in the handle and pushed the dowel back in place. As many others had installed this module before, I wasn't paranoid enough to setup a safety over ride.
