My wife's 2011 XJL, 51,238 miles, 5.0L N/A V-8, broke down yesterday on a business trip in South Carolina. Water pump. Repair costs at a local European repair business is $933.96. Before looking at this thread, I thought it was early in the life of the engine for the water pump to go. And before this trip, we had not "smelled" any coolant. The car is garage kept, and usually in such a space the smell of any coolant that's leaking would be evident. Also, 90% of the time just drives it back and forth to work.

I have read Johndahlheimer's comments of the coolant and seals. But mechanically the design of the pump is also an issue I think.

Just so disappointing that such an important part on this car is failing so early.
Rodney-

Thank you, apparently we are of a kindred spirit. Sorry to hear about your unplanned water pump failure expense.

I am not aware of the details of the Jaguar 5.0L pump design, nor for that matter, the mechanical face seal design used in it, although I have my hunches.

Yes, I have been issued fifteen patents on seals and pump designs, and my seal designs have repeatedly been chosen for the more demanding engine applications, i.e. ultra high engine RPMs.

In the one case where I was able to influence the pump design along with the mechanical face seal used in it, it was the only pump in a range of engines produced by this auto manufacturer that experienced zero water pump failures within the warranty period of 50,000 miles, a feat never equaled by any auto manufacturer anywhere before or since then.

Interestingly, the parent company of that for which worked, an international consortium, went to extraordinary lengths to assure my seal design was replaced by their "in-house" design, which was clearly less capable.

Why?

I have asked myself that question many times. Suspicion one: they had sizable capital production equipment investments, and marketing commitments made in "their" in-house design, and therefore were threatened by my clearly superior design and methods of manufacturing it with virtually "zero defects"; and/or two: they didn't want to see their sizable aftermarket sales (six times their OEM sales) disappear because automotive water pumps no longer failed due to excessive seal leakage.

Either way, I was cut off from further contact with any OEM automotive water pump engineers, whom I had worked with for over three decades.

There have been 3 versions of the water pump for the 5L engine. Below, the first picture is the latest version that in not stamped as FoMoCo as was the two previous versions. The latest version is made in Italy and is a different design. I hope this is the final fix for our premature water pump failures

Although you can't judge a book by it's cover, nor a water pump by it's external appearance, I will say the pump on the left is the more impressive looking. Unfortunately the water pump, and most everything else on the 5.0L engine is out of direct sight, so I can only hope I got a newer design, and that the newer design truly is better, especially the water pump mechanical face seal it contains, which virtually dictates the functional life of the pump.

Have you ever seen an article or conversed with anyone regarding details of the various versions? Thanks for your post and any further info you can provide.

John if you look at the water pump and can see an oval with Land Rover cast into it is the new pump. I tried my best to take a picture of it but you may have to zoom in to see it.

Thank you so much for taking this picture; unfortunately I can't seem to get the same vantage point to view the pump; I've got a big fat coolant hose blocking my view. Oh well, I guess it is what it is.

But thanks again, I really appreciate the effort!

Can you post the part number on the work order, that will allow others to compare when theirs were changed.

My pump was replaced in February the part # is C2Z29189, I also can not see the new stamp on the housing.

The water pump rock auto sells is C2Z21781, if the model # nomenclature is consistent I would think the pump design rock auto is selling is rather old, the one I have on my car is newer and the C2Z3 is the newest?

The latest pump was not available till April or May this year and Jaguar may be still be shipping the old style till they run out. In my case the parts and tech had to order the new style after the first one they received was the older style. If anyone is getting the pump replaced make sure that the dealer orders the new part and refuses the old style.

The part number on the water-pump used to replace my original August 11, 2015 is C2Z31146, so I guess I got the latest model. Here is hoping it lasts longer than 42,000 miles this time.

Thanks again for your help on this XJsss!

Mine just shot craps yesterday, at 54k miles. Is the part number the same for the NA motor? If so, I'd like to make sure I get the new one, since I'm going to the trouble.

EDIT: NM. Ordered from Gaudin - they were great. Car should be back in business by Saturday.

Here's a link to the parts. Gaudin told me to order 2 tube seals and the pump and that's it, the gasket comes with the pump: http://www.gaudinjaguarparts.com/aut...ater-pump-scat

I've had to top off my coolant every 2 weeks and losing about half a water bottle. I wonder if the water pump is leaking. My car is a 2012 SC.

Even though you live in California, you should keep your coolant mixture at least 50% to 70% of approved silicate and phosphate free antifreeze, combined with distilled water, so don't just refill with only water, especially tap water.

"Half a water bottle" isn't too precise, half an 8 ounce bottle would be 4 ounces; half a gallon bottle would be 64 ounces. Regardless, I would be concerned about this amount of leakage.

Considering the cost of replacing your 5.0L supercharged engine, I would ask my dealer to determine the cause of loss of coolant by pressure checking your cooling system.

If it were me i'd take it to your dealer and have them do a pressure test.

Thanks for the input guys. I just called the dealer and made an appt for an oil change and pressure test. I don't if I should bring up the SC clicking noise too because of my pulley upgrade.

If it sounds like a can of marbles you absolutely need to bring it up, the torsion isolator is a terrible design that has nothing to do with the pulley. Amazingly one of the few bad designs Jaguar can not take credit for.

Adding in on this, my 2011 NA V8 water pump was replaced at 35,000 miles. A pressure test showed 0PSI held.
