Default Transmission service

Hello all,

Am looking to replace the transmission oil in my 2011 XJ (5.0L naturally aspirated) as part of its 100,000km service. Service manual mentions replacing the sealing washers. Anyone know what size they are on the fill and drain plugs, (aluminium I presume)? The manual also makes mention of replacing the plugs with new ones when servicing. Is this just their way of charging over $42GBP per plug to keep someone employed...lol.

I never replace metal sealing rings. I anneal them with a blowtorch (get them glowing red hot, let them cool). This removes the work hardening that stops them sealing properly when you reuse them. If I'm still worried about sealing properly, a little Permatex non-setting gasket compound around the ring does the trick. I've never had a leak.

If you are going to do a tranny service, if it were me, i would be changing out your mechatronic plug seal, adapter seal and valve body seals, the kit is cheap as genuine parts from zf and will go a long way to preserving your transmission, if you are going to change your oil, may aswell do it now rather than dropping the oil again later.
Have your gearbox mount inspected too and your prop shaft flex coupling.
These items may not be needed immediately, but are cheap insurance for preventative maintenance imho.

Buy a genuine ZF 6HP kit off.....whatever store, they are not expensive. It is a DIY job if you have access to a lift (You can do it on axle stands, but it's messy)

Plenty of how to Vids on youtube for this gearbox.

I like to use this place for ZF stuff. They have kits with everything you need. Makes it easy and prices are pretty good for real ZF parts.

Here is our kit for the 6 speed units.
