Turning off headlights

The left-hand switch on my UK car (right-hand drive) on the steering column binnacle for direction indicators is also the lights switch and has settings: -
- Off
- Sidelights
- Main headlights
- Auto lights
- some settings for time delay on lights switch-off
If you are on auto, the lights come on in the dark or at least when light levels are low. If you then turn them off anyway, you'll get a warning. Lights should switch off when engine is turned off.

The dealer programming puts the car in either normal mode or DRL mode. It can be switched back and forth by programming only--you can't do this with any in car controls. DRL mode only keeps your headlights on all the time as required in Canada--it does not affect the LED lights below the headlights. There is no way to get these to come on without the headlights unless you put the light switch in park mode and then the taillights come on too.

Just a word on DLRs- they have never proven to increase safety by any measurable margin and in fact are believed by many (including me) to actually DECREASE safety. Canada adopted DLRs following a study carried out in Scandinavia. This study later proved to be as credible as Algore and his global warming crap.
A drawback with DLRs is that it turns on the headlight and dashlights- but not tail or marker lights. This means that cars without autolights are commonly seen driving around with the rear end 'dark' and the driver unaware.

I don't know for sure since I've never had mine programmed in DRL mode, but I would think that the automatic light function would still work to turn on your taillights and running lights after dark--it's just that the headlights would stay on all the time. The "park" switch position is totally different--it just turns on the front LED lights and taillights only.

For convention, we here have all our cars programmed for Daytime Running Lights, unless the new owner requests otherwise. That makes the headlamps come on whenever a gear is selected, regardless of the headlamp switch setting. If you want to run your car with the front LED "Signature Lights" only, then DRL's must be programmed off. It is a setting that can't be changed by the driver.
Hope that helps!
