Upper control arms and shocks?
Hi all,
Need to replace front upper control arms due to clunking and vibration. Car is 2010 XJL with 92k miles on the clock. Going to try the AC Delco arms for ~$60/ arm off Rock Auto. Question is would you recommend doing shocks and springs at the same time considering I pay for labor and seems like there is overlap in the work involved? Shocks are around $250 each.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Have you checked the whole of the front suspension - joints, bushes, etc ? AFAIK the front suspension is the same design as the previous model, (X350), but has coil springs, not air, (it is air at the rear). The bushes at the bottom of the spring units wear out very quickly; have you replaced these ? In addition, the lower wishbone trunnion bushes wear out, especially the fronts, on the banana arm. It can be expensive replacing stuff on these cars.
I replaced all my shocks @98k as the ride was getting choppy and hard. I'm glad I replaced them and purchased them from RockAuto and used Bilstein as they are the OEM supplier. I agree do the fronts as you will be there. the rears are fairly easy and can be done later if you like. I will say that the Bilstein rears are not always available on RockAuto, and their price is great when you know that the Jaguar boxed unit is 2 times the price. BTW my XJ rides like new.
Thanks for the input. Thus far I have done lower control arm bushings (C2D4723) and sway bar bushings on the front.
Based on the feedback I’ll add in the shocks too. XJsss, did you get new coil springs too? If so where did you get them from?
Fraser, I know what you mean by things getting expensive quickly as I recently ventured through the engine bay maintenance/ repairs (ouch). Which bushings under the springs are you referring to, is it the spring seat (MJA216AA)? Thanks

Be careful. It all appears to be the same front suspension setup as the X350 but its actually not. There are very slight differences in both lower control arms. The tie rods and tie rod ends are also different. I'm not sure about the upper arms or the sway bar endlinks.
If you are paying for labour, then yes, definitely replace the shocks and springs at the same time.
Does anybody know if the XJR shocks will place nice with the non-R suspension control system?
