Default Whole in engine

Hey guys
i my 2011 xj with 154000 kilometers i was driving on the freeway and badaboum. Here you can see in picture the whole in the bottom engine. The dealer says 19000€ to change the engine.
My question, did it happen to someone? Is it reparable at this place of the engine block ?
thanks

That is what is called in the USA a "Catastrophic Failure", Usually much cheaper to replace the whole engine. Rather then to try, and repair what you have. I'll let someone on your side of the pond, give you advice on price, versus cost. As it would be very different from ours. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply, thats what the dealer told me at about 23000 dollars, and the car is not wirth this anymore so have to think on used engine.
Do you know what part of the engine got the whole ? Maybe its the oil sump that be replaced or is it higher directly in the engine block ?
Thanks

Strange place for a hole, any idea what caused it? Looks like something has punched its way out. Second hand engine would be the cheapest way out.

Not sure what exactly is in that area but the only thing in the engine capable of punching through the block like that is part of the rotating mass probably a connecting rod. The engine is toast. It is either a used engine or sell the car for scrap and get another. As old as it is I would not even consider putting a dime into it. Sell it and move on.

This engine cannot be repaired, as it is likely that connecting rod punched a hole in the block. This means pretty much anything connected to that cylinder (top and bottom) is damaged or destroyed.

Did you ever hear any rattling or knocking noises prior to this failure? It is uncommon for this to just suddenly happen, unless there was extreme over-rev or complete loss of oil pressure. Speaking of oil pressure, for a hole this big I don't see any signs of oil. When you coasted to a stop, was there a pool of oil under the car? If not, where did it go?

I was driving pretty cool this day around 120 km/h, oil was good, it was at 3/4, never heard anything just 10 seconds before this happened it was on maximum rev as if the gear was in 2 and it exploded, there was lot of oil on the road yes and lot of antifreeze.
Today computer is saying please add 1 liter of oil.
I will look for a used engine because its a very clean car otherwise.
Thanks for your comments maybe this will help someone else
