Default XJ Purchase...

Hi, everyone.
I'm a proud owner of 2017 F-Type R convertible. Love it.
Saw some great deals on current 2019 XJ R sports, Jag dealers are advertising $30K off sticker, 0% financing, & no payments until Jan 2021.
Sounds too good to be true, wonder what the catch is.
My wife's 2015 Mercedes E400, twin-turbo V6, has 40K miles & 1 yr left on extended warranty. She loves it, drives great & we plan on keeping it for awhile.
We're planning replacement in few yrs on another E class, 5 series, A6, or maybe XF. But these XJ offers looks very attractive.
Wanted to get your opinions on a few points.
Love the performance of my F-type, of course 550 hp for a 2-seater is totally diff from the big full-size sedan. Her current twin-turbo V6 performs well for a mid-size sedan, so will the V6 in the XJ full-size sedan is sufficient, or do we need to look at the V8?
The included 5 yr maintenance on my F-Type is great, that's a positive on the next Jag.
One concern is JD Powers' latest initial quality rankings has Jag/LR at the bottom, so worried about future quality issues? Although no issues with my F-type so far.
We see that this current XJ generation started in 2009? So we're at the end of model cycle? That's why it's such at a discount?
Thanks for your comments...

I find that the V6 in the XJ feels way better than the numbers suggest. It really moves, and the overall impression is helped by the turbine-smoothness of the V6. There's also something about the car which makes one relax, that feeling of being remote from the outside world, so that I hardly ever put my foot down anyway. I have never, not even once, wished that it had more power.

I guess only the people who drove a XJ knows it is so versatile. It can be quick, even with a V6, but also poised and gliding. It is big to be comfortable but still nimble at the corners. It is family friendly, but never blend in the commons. If I can have only one car, XJ without doubt.

Production of the X351 ceased last year and any cars remaining in the dealer network are being sold off with large discounts. There was one in my local dealer a couple of months ago. Its a real bargain, but still an expensive car. All-aluminium like your F-type, with air-suspension on the rear wheels, and yo get the US 5-year warranty too. Here in the UK its three years.

Yes, the US 5 yr factory warranty & 5 yr maintenance is a big selling point for us...

I agree, but I do miss the "off idle grunt" that our previous V-8 powered XJ-L had

The V-8 is $18K more than the V-6
Not sure if the extra 130 hp is worth it...?

I drove a 3.0l AWD and felt it was adequate and could get the job done. Not sure how the XJ attracts street racing, I don’t foresee anyone instigating a race unless it’s the XJ owner instigating. But the v6 is the base engine and know as such with the 3.0l emblem on the trunk. With all that said. I decided to shop for a 5.0l SC since I am a little bit of a gear head and like powerful vehicles. Is the power needed? Nah. Does it gIve a heightened sense of superiority. YES it does. You will find me instigating a street match.

So living here in the country now and driving here and there on the 2 lane roads I come up on slower moving vehicles. And having 510hp I mash the loud peddle ( My Cat Growls) and move into the left lane and pass anywhere from 1 to 4 in a shot. Move back into the right lane and the kitty purrs and burbls till she is moving again at a legal speed. Na no six will do. Just MHO

I was comparing our former 2012 XJ-L, in which the naturally aspirated V-8 was the standard engine, and has since been discontinued. The "extra $18K" that you're referring to, is for the supercharged version of the V-8.

The Supercharged V8 is more than just the engine. Suspension, brakes, wheels, and interior are upgraded.

i used to own a NA V8 XJ....loved it, absolutely amazing. got a V6 model, and hated it within months...gave it to my father, got an XFR instead and was in love with that supercharged V8 and told myself i will never go back to anything other than a V8

but CARZ, you have a V6 model now! correct, i needed a fairly affordable larger car, and the XJ is my go-to. im forcing myself to live with the V6....its not horrible....but its just not the same

Yes, I'm extremely pleased with my 550 hp for my 3500 lbs, 2 door F-Type R
But a little worried about XJ's 340 hp V6 powering its' 4000 lbs....

I have no problems with theV6. It will definitely get you in plenty of trouble quite quickly. You can also put a tune on it and get 400HP out of the motor. I ride a superbike with 185 rear wheel horsepower and 425lbs on the street and the racetrack so I have a pretty good idea of what is quick and fast. The XJ is very quiet so you do not have the sense of speed other cars will give you. I certainly do not try to antagonize other drivers but there seems to be some idiots who want to race it because it is a Jaguar. The worst idiots are those who tailgate me. I would buy the cleanest and lowest mileage car that met my budget. and quit worrying about horsepower you can't use on the highways of the United States without going to jail. Would love a V8 or SVR 575 for a weekend but if I drove it all the time I would be in jail and yes I have drove a V8 XJ. Besides, you can't get some cell phone blabbing idiot in a Prius out of the left lane anyway.

I guess I'm in a fairly unique position.

I have a 2012 XJ N/A 5.0 6hp. My wife has a 2017 F-Pace S/C 3.0 8hp. Both tip the scale at circa 4000lbs

Neither is slow ,far from it,. The XJ has way more "low down grunt" The F-Pace needs more revs to get it into the "play zone". The F-Pace tends to 'hunt for a gear' and will skip 2 or 3 gears to find the correct one. Example; Accelerate hard on a slip ramp and the car will drop 2/3 gears. Once you lift the throttle it will go from 3/4/5th to 8th in an instant.

I haven't looked at torque curves but, I suspect that the 5.0 has a lot more at lower revs

I had an X350 Super V8 and the changed to a X351 V6 in March 2019. Although I miss the sound and the smoothness of the V8, the V6 has enough power for a fast ride even on a german autobahn. So IMHO there is no need for the bigger engine in terms of power but let‘s face it: there is nothing like a V8

I am sure it would be fun but here in the United States it is just a waste, especially around any urban area. It just gets you to the jail quicker. I already have a faster vehicle anyway. An Aprilia RSV4 will eat a car for breakfast. There is absolutely no need for the bike, I just like to hear the sound a V4 makes.

MV Rider,

Any venicle that can go more than 75mph is a waste. Several years ago I sold my Fireblade, nothing wrong with it, just didn't want to die.

Totally agree. That is why I go to the racetrack. Not meaning to dig on you as I can't wait to see pictures of the 575. Love the Velocity blue. My motto is "As long as you don't send the bill to my house, get whatever you want and enjoy it." Besides, one of these days down at the nursing home you can tell your buds you had a Jaguar XJR 575 and it was fast as hell.
