1986 Vanden Plas , what is this hose?

Just recently bought a 1986 Vanden Plas and while going over the engine, came across this hose with a filter(?). While I source some repair manuals, can anyone tell me what this is?

See item 11. Unlike so many other parts on the early XJ's, this one is in plentiful supply from many sources!
