You need to check that all the bushings and ball joints are in good order. Jack up the car with the wheels still tightened and try to rock the wheel in and out and top to bottom. You shouldn't have anything moving. I know the xj12 wears out lower bushings very quickly due to the weight of the vehicle. I have had shocks in the past go bad as well and start making clicking noises. Can you try to replicate the sound while the car is parked by pushing down on the vehicle.
