Does the XJ12 use the same expansion tank as the six cylinder car? SNG Barrett website implies it does by not having a separate V12 listing but I want to confirm. Thanks, John
By expansion tank are you referring to the engine coolant system ?
There is some experience issues and resolution on this from others
I do not have the V - 12 and the V - 12 has a proper / real world coolant service level procedure
There was some issues with the coolant level sensor ( different type connector specific ) especially with the X308 ( V - 8 ) that does not have the V - 12 ( out of V - 12 engine production )
Did you have a problem with your expansion tank? Mine split it's seams, on a very hot day, a couple of years ago, it turned out one of the thermostats had not been correctly seated and that possibly caused an over heat, interestingly the pressure relief cap didn't vent although the tank split it's seam.
I had heard rumours of the coolant tanks in our cars having this problem so to prevent it in future I secured the two halves of the tank with S/S machine screws and nuts all around the perimeter of the tank about an inch apart and so far so good with two new thermostats correctly seated. See pix.
Cheers,
Jeff.
I separated the tank halves, they were bonded together with a soft sem setting sealant. It had split along the edge where the bleed hoses fit.
My solution using S/S screws and nuts on the new tank before I installed it.
That’s not a bad idea considering the price of a new one.
Yes, my XJ12 got cooked yesterday. Perhaps the split seam added to the visual drama. When you overheated your XJ12 did you drop a valve seat? Doing a compression test this evening to see how much damage I’ve done.
Luckily when my tank split it popped loudly and I pulled off the road and shut it down quickly and no damage was done. That happened around 3 years ago and the car makes no unusual noises and performs as well as it ever did. Lucky me.
Just finished the compression test and it appears the engine survived. I’ve always mistreated this car like the $900 car it was, so this was a good chance to clean all the acorns and crap out of the engine V. These cars are so much more user friendly than an XJS. The nice short AC compressor, and how the accelerator turn table is suspended instead of on a tower means those plugs need no gymnastics to remove. The access is awesome. So it’s getting new plugs, wires, fuel rail cross over hoses, and injector seals while I’m in there.
