The 1995/1996 XJ12 this forum in concerned with was a wonderful and reliable automobile.
He also mentioned catalytic converters so I'm thinking it must be a more modern type. Maybe the XJ40 era. Either way, expecting to cruise for hours at 125mph is a recipe for disaster. I wouldn't even attempt that in a modern car and expect it last well.

I had a 76 XJ12C that had the exact same catalytic converter / power steering fluid fire he described hehehe. I was maybe 23 and all proud of my Jag and these other guys pull up to the red light and they are all excited…. “Dude, your car is on fire”.

Didn't realise they were intruduced in 75' in the US. We didn't get them forced on us until 93'.

huh? Any relatively performance oriented decent car should be able to do this all day long. 125mph is not very fast when the average speed in most states is 80-85mph. In fact, i've done just this in germany many years ago in both a Mercedes and Porsche and it was a non issue.

The speed limit in the UK is 70mph. Yes, most people tend to drive 80mph but not 125mph. You go to jail if you get caught at those speeds. If it was legal and the roads and traffic conditions were fair, I'd happily cruise at 100mph having driven up to 190mph previously. But I wouldn't do that in a 28 year old XJ12.

Strange indeed.

What a cynic I am. Whenever I see a strange first post with location given as USA, my credibility meter goes into the red zone. It's so unusual for any US member not to give State and usually City too. IP address shows xj12trash is about as far from the USA as it's possible to get without an ice breaker.

Why anyone would bother to register on the forum and reply to a 6 year old thread just to have a moan escapes me.

Graham

Well best of luck, I have had 2 XJ12s still have one, 96 with 61K miles, still LOVE it, but something is always wrong with it , just remember you have to drive it, otherwise it falls apart.
