04 rear brake calipers
Im trying to get my brakes bled. I had to open the system to change the bushings in the upper control arms. I thought I had the system bled, went to all 4 calipers, was getting no bubbles. Tested the car and have almost no brake pedal. It will just barely stop before hitting bottom. I took the rear calipers back off the brackets- not opening the system again. The slide pins move easily and the pistons spin easily using the proper tool but there is not room between the calipers and pads to move them much. I have a shop I would trust to get it fixed, but thats just not me. Anyway Ill be taking it to them for the alignment after the suspension work. Ive searched this area, looked over the stickies and read the brake section there. I see that these calipers can be a pain, so 2 things. Is there any way I can facilitate getting the air out with my little hand pump or am I just under-tooled for this job? And, more intriguing to me, Can anyone put up a diagram of the inner workings of this caliper for my own and everyones edification? I am very curious of how this thing works.
Thanks all,
Thanks all,
Do you have the 320 front 288 rear?
always the same trouble with those!
Caliper hanging high ,pressure bleeding or suction, twice around the car. ( remember to inspect guide slide pins clean them and the hole, regrease .
when ready for test drive go tho a gravel or sand spot activate Abs braking .
had xj8 2003 and xj6 same trouble also on the pins
Know of some brake boosters shot so good idea to use suction... maybe once more necessary after the Abs braking

I'm not sure of the part numbers off hand, I don't see those numbers on them. I'm sure they are stock, what came on the car. I went around and cracked the flex lines at their top ends to allow air out at the high spots and rebled all around again. No difference. Is it possible I messed up the master cylinder or the abs pump with my playing? I never opened the system anywhere but the rear calipers to get the top rear control arms off and even then I hooked them back up while I was working . Not my favorite car this week.

Heres my tentative conclusion for this adventure. I used the method that Koshka linked to. Thank You very much. It is a relatively simple procedure and Had That Been the Problem, I believe it would have worked but I got no air out. As was obvious this was a problem that I caused. The brakes were fine before I started dinking around. I concluded that at some point in my bleeding with my little hand vacuum pump, I allowed the reservoir to get too low. Fortunately (as much as I complain about their engineering) Jaguar put a bleeder screw on the master cylinder Just For Me and my antics. I removed a lot of plastic trim parts around the master that I think are just extraneous in order to get at the bleeder. I only found it by feeling around underneath. I Installed a tube on it and did my little thing. I got a bunch of air out there and now the brakes seem fine. The weather is still nasty so I limited it to back and forth in the garage a bit. If there is a problem here in the future I will update.
Otherwise, keep your stick on the ice - and keep that reservoir full.
