Default 05 XJ VDP Front suspension "Thunk"

I notice that over bumps/dips there is a "thunk" on the LF side. Could this be the struts and/or shocks that need replacing?

Thx

It could be the lower shock bush, but not the whole shock assembly.

The front spring/shock assemblies secure to the lower wishbone with a bush well known to wear out prematurely. The bushes are pressed into the lower wishbone, the shock bolts up to it via a forked lug, and it is a matter of pressing out the old bush and pressing in the new ones. Trouble is the dismantling needed to get the wishbone out to do this, so the labour cost is quite high. All the shocks front and rear have these lower bushes, (although the rears are pressed into the shock not the wishbone), and the four of them together take the weighT of the car - no wonder they wear out early !! I have just had to replace the two rears on my XJ6.

On the other hand it could be related to the anti-roll bar bushes, (sway bar in the USA). These also wear and can make a noise too. Best to get a shop to test out the front suspension bushes.

Here is a UK supplier page for the front shock bush. As you can see it is very cheap. Its the work to get at it that costs.
