Like many others here who have posted on this forum who have air-sprung XJs (the aluminium model), you probably need a service-exchange air compressor, situated behind the front bumper. Cold weather apparently makes things worse when they start to fail. It's one of the few issues on these cars that regularly turn up.

I tried the relay on mine and it didn't help. I hope it works for you. The relay is R1.

I also think the compressor is going out. I have a theory that letting the compressor get too bad contributes to more serious faults such as failed air springs and damaged CATS dampers due to driving the cars with the air springs at too-low pressures. I suggest getting the fault code read at the dealer and getting it fixed right away. I just replaced mine assuming it was the compressor...I was right.

Hi I had the same problem with my '04 XJ8. Cold weather fault message displayed. Luckily I was covered under the extended factory warranty. Get the codes read. You can get to a one year, one vehicle subscription to Alldata that will give you repair proceedures, bulletins and wiring diaghrams. Good luck George

I had the same problem with my 04 XJ8 and I replaced the compressor behind the front bumper. If you are mechanically inclined its really not that hard. I bought my compressor from Arnott Industries, you can google them. They were the best price.

You can get from the left front, take down the splash shield and unbolt the front fender well you will see it there.

Some mechanics say taking off the front fender is easier and gives more room than going in from the wheel arch. Mind you, I have not done this job myself !!
