Default 2004 xj8 engine overheating

Replaced thermostat and water pump and still overheating. Can’t see any leaks from hoses and radiator isn’t leaking. Any thoughts on what may be causing engine to overheat? It seems like water isn’t getting circulated into the engine? Thanks.

It sounds like you have taken the normal, regular steps to address a problem that does, on occasion happen to these engines. Usually they do not indicate major problems, unless they have been overheated while driving and the issue not recognized in a timely manor. What were the symptoms that led you to doing the work you have so far? Also, are you tracking the temp with a "code reader" to see what the temperature is and how long it takes to get hot? Is it still losing coolant, and if so, how much and how quick?

Finding small leaks on the 4.2L N/A is a pain. Using a dye pack for the coolant, UV light and super-duper yellow glasses is one way to go. The UV glasses and UV pen light run around $15 and 2 oz. of coolant dye is another $8. Both can be found at your favorite auto parts store.

Another option is to buy or rent a relative cheap hand pump leak detector that threads onto the expansion tank. Pump it up to 10-12-14 PSI and look for coolant drips. The Mityvac 4560 helped me a lot. $45.

The coolant gauge on the speedometer cluster is worthless when it comes to monitoring true coolant temperature. Use an OBD II to check actual coolant temperature. Borrow, buy or have parts store check temps for you.

If you aren't losing coolant, then this normally would point to the thermostat. Check again to make doubly sure that you installed the correct thermostat. Personally, I would use nothing but OEM.
