I have a very intermittent problem with the headlights on my XJ8, as for no apparent reason they will flicker or shut themslevs off completely. They seem to reset if I adjust the dealight selection on the steering column arm. Is this a common fault with this age of car? I wondered if it could be automatic headlight sensor, or a dodgy connection to the headlight switch on the steering column? Cant seem to get any error data with my scanner so a bit perplexed! My flicker and headlight shut-off problems were solved by replacing the dimmer switch on the column. Sometimes it can be the bulbs themselves as well.

 

If the flickering is both headlights, I suspect your lighting switch on the steering binnacle. I had this problem and a new switch cured it. The switches have a little circuit board inside and lots of wires and connections, so plenty to go wrong. UK price is around £130
