2004 xj8 and no a\c!
So recently, thanks to the help of everyone here on the forum, I replaced my leaky power steering pump. In the process of doing so, I loosened one of the air conditioner gas lines to make it easier to install and ended up releasing a green gas at a rapid rate. Since then I have no A\C anymore. Obviously the gas leaking out is what caused this, but what i would like to know is if this is something that i can buy at autozone and replace, or do i have to take it to a a\c shop? Thanks ahead of time guys! 2004 Jaguar XJ8 LHD with 153000 miles
Hi etaent,
It sounds as though you released the refrigerant gas from your A/C system. The green color you noted was probably the oil that is injected into the system to lubricate the compressor.
It is possible to invest in some basic equipment, study the online training resources and service your A/C system yourself. But if you want the best performance, I would highly recommend that you visit a good professional auto A/C shop. They will properly evacuate your system to remove any air and moisture that may have entered when you opened the fitting, along with the remaining refrigerant, which by law must not be released into the atmosphere. They will then perform an extended vacuum test to ensure there are no leaks, then refill with the proper amounts of oil and refrigerant for optimal system performance.
The local independent shop I use charges between $70.00 and $100.00 for this service depending on the vehicle and how much R134a refrigerant is required. Prices may vary in your area.
Cheers,
Don
