Default 2004 XJR Battery

Just bought a 2004 XJR without a battery. Decided to try an AGM type, which I have never used before. Anyone had a good long life with one like this? Thanks

The recommended battery is a Calcium type. (though AGM will work, why not buy the recommended type?)

There is a difference in alternator output voltage. XJ is designed for Calcium. Although, because the alternator only outputs max voltage for 5mins and then switches back to 13.something, sure an AGM would be OK from this aspect.

The universal advice is choose a Calcium battery. It's what the manual says.
However, I do not see anything wrong with an AGM battery, given that the alternator drops back as mentioned.
(my car happens to have Calcium, which it came with, and I would most likely stick with)

I did see another post where a member strongly recommended the Calcium over an AGM, so I think I will go that route, just to play it safe.

Batteries has been a lively topic amongst Jag owners. If you are interested in technical detail there was a recent thread "Still available?? Exide Global Extreme" that delves a little into battery lead alloys and charging voltages. My take on the dialogue is almost any battery will work for some amount of time. The greater unknown is reliability. I still have not seen hard data comparing calcium alloy to silver-calcium alloy reliability as a function of charging voltage.

I was able to purchase a Bosch S5 from my indy…… silver-calcium. Happy Hunting!

Just fitted a Bosch S5 AGM (850CCA, 95aH) - will feedback if I have any issues
