Default 2004 xjr transmssion fluid

My xjr on a trip to Napa showed me the engine light icon symbol and later in the drive spelled out " transmission fault". As I have had enough phantom codes and things from my jags viewed it with dismay. Car drove fine, I also got the RP( restricted performance) spelled out. Car drove fine up there and back. I had my code reader and no codes were found.

Got the car cooled down and drove back home and no transmission fault came up. Went to the local auto parts store and had them read and some 1474 code came up once then when cleared nothing again.

As I have had a small tranny pan leak and understand changing the gasket is a pain( refilling the fluid actually) and want to get that done. Local mechanic( past Jag mechanic when there was a local dealership) said to buy the fluid and he'd change it. He said some customer of his had found a place on line for about $10 a quart instead of the usual $20 or so per quart of I think it is the ZF fluid. Does anyone have a source for it at a more reasonable price point?

Anyone had these phantom tranny fault warnings, but no code?

Low fluid will cause all kinds of problems, I know, I had them.

If you are good with a wrench, you can do it yourself. I used a lift but 4 good jack stands will do just fine.

I don't think you are getting the Lifeguard fluid for that price, but Mercon SP can be used and its around $7 a quart. It's the fluid used in the Lincoln Navigator which also uses the ZF 6HP26. A number of members have used it and Redline D6 ATF and were happy with the results. I'm changing mine soon and the $20 a quart is just insane.
