2005 X350 Transmission error code P0735
Folks, I've done a lot of reading of various threads on P0735, 5th gear ratio fault.
What I'm seeing in the manual as possible causes are:
-Transmission mechanical failure
-TCM/Control valve failure
What I have yet to discover is what people have found out to be the root cause/problem in their transmission with this error. If it is mechanical failure, what is failing? Most of the time it shifts fine, and if I shift manually, there doesn't seem to be any problem.
So what is really going on to cause the noise and the error code? And is it really a case of "find a used replacement"?
By the way, I did the tranny pan/filter change (this time was 125k miles, the first time was around 70k miles) and the magnets were nearly spotless with no metal evident anywhere (just a very thin layer of dark metallic stuff that came off with one wipe of a finger). Nothing like the magnet I pulled out of a Ford Expedition pan when I did that fluid change--it looked like Einstein's hair but the tranny ran fine).
So, what have folks with this error code found to be the problem, and how did they resolved it?
Looking forward to some good solutions (not too hard/not too expensive). I was thinking I might do a complete fluid flush (through the cooler lines) so I replace all of the fluid instead of only 5.5 quarts (I used ZF fluid). But even with Mercon, it will be expensive, so I don't want to bother if the tranny is hosed.
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Gordon

Hi Gordon, from my experience P0735 is usually related to the E Clutch failing. (mechanical) that would require a rebuild.
When I had my 04 XJ8 I had a 3-4 gear load fault. I changed the valve body, bridge and other seals from the valve body to the trans. Improvement was noted. I had to baby the trans when driving between 3-4 gears and it shifted without issue.
Same with manual up shift. But all in all everything I did (reflash TCM/clear adaptations also) did not cure the fault so it was mechanical in nature.
I traded in the car for a new Nissan. Some local dealer in NJ purchased my car and now is trying to sell it stating trans is 100%... go figure...
