2005 XJ8L Interior ceiling lights not working
The Interior ceiling and map lights don't function properly, The dome light does not work when the door is open. It is very dim when you hit the push button switch on the ceiling console. Ay ideas?
I see two problems:
one, that the door switch is not working, or maybe the door module,
and two, that the bulb is so old that it has lost brightness, or the internal filament has lost particles that cloud the bulb from within.
The second one should be easy to fix by replacing the bulb(s).
For the first one, do you have a code reader to verify whether a related error code is shown?
Best regards,
Thomas

Hello Thomas, I should have mentioned the floor lights go on when the door is opened and the dome light does not. I would assume it's not the door module. The dome light will come on dimly when you turn it on using the switch. When you hit the map light switch, it goes dim then out. I will try replacing the bulbs as you suggested.
Thank you again for your response, Frank

Hi Frank,
The overhead map lights have a different earth return pathway from the overhead courtesy light, so it is less likely to be an earthing problem affecting those lights.
Both the map and courtesy lights are however fed from a common supply source at the rear power distribution fuse box.
Your car is a 2005, but I initially referred to a 2006 schematic that references the common supply comes through fuse F11 (5A) supplied via relay R7B (I think that is a system relay that is not user replaceable).
Check the voltage on F11 and whether you have good voltage at both ends of F11 when map light is then turned on.
If there is a significant voltage drop across the fuse, then replace the fuse.
If the supply to the fuse drops, then you may have an issue with a resistive contact in relay R7, but that would also show up on the other fuses fed by that relay (F12 and F13).
If your 2005 car has earlier wiring layout more in line with 2004 production, then you are looking at F25 (10A) in the passenger junction fuse box, with relay R1 being the source and other fuses on that relay are F24, F26, F27 and F28.
Good luck

I am having a very similar issue with my 2004 XJ8. When I open the door only the front floor lights illuminate. If I hit the switch for the map lights while the door is open, they will not illuminate. However, if I close the door each one will turn on individually. If you turn on one of the front map lights it will be at standard brightness but if you try to turn on the other side at the same time, they will both be very dim. The center light will not function under any conditions. I went and checked the F11 (5 amp) fuse in the rear fuse panel in the trunk and noticed it was blown. I replaced it with another 5 amp fuse and as soon as I opened the read passenger door (the one closest to me at the time) there was a click and I knew the fuse had just blown. I had no more 5 amp fuses so I then placed a 10 amp in it's place just to try and troubleshoot with the trunk open and panel accessible so I could pull the fuse quickly if something started to burn. With the 10 amp in, the rear floor lights and rear map lights all illuminated when opening the door. They pulsed for a moment and I removed the fuse. I waited then re installed and there was no pulsing. I began looking for lights that weren't illuminated when the door was open and the only lights that would not come on were the front map lights. The only light that consistently did not light through all configurations was the center light in the overhead console up front. I pulled the panel and checked the bulb and it looked like it was good. I can't imagine a bulb would cause a short in the system like that. I am not going to run with a 10 amp where a 5 amp should be because there is obviously a problem.
Sorry for the long "story" but I feel like whatever is wrong in my car is the same problem in yours. Please update on your solution and I will do my best to return to this thread to update you on mine.
