2006 Jaguar XJ8 Stuck in Park or Reverse
It started a few days ago when I would attempt to shift into drive, the j-gate would move to the drive position then get hung up in reverse. It progressed to where it then jammed into park and the lever wouldn't move. I was able to reach under the front/left side of the transmission and yank the cable and get it into reverse again or back to park in order to start. It's at my buddy's shop and we're going to put on the rack and inspect the nut/bolts that I was told by the service writer at Hornberg Jaguar sometimes come lose and get stripped. He said that if we pulled the codes and there are no transmission codes that it would be something external. He also advised that if the transmission fluid was low this could happen. (My car has 64k miles and no leaks so I am doubting that it would be the latter). Anyone been down this road before? Your input greatly appreciated!

Loose bolts on the tranny cable bracket near the tranny case has been reported a few times on this forum. If you have no fault codes or display it could very well be these bolts.
Time to get underneath and inspect !

Thank you for this excellent forum. My problem has been solved. It was the bolt on the left side of the transmission securing the cables causing it to get stuck in reverse. The problem was solved for $250 and I picked the car up today. It's shifting perfectly now.
Just had this very same thing happen to me. Thanks to this forum I was able to quickly figure out the problem, and just like its stated, one of the bolts fell out on the ground right under the car. Had to get it towed because I was not close to home and didn't have access to tools.
