Default 2007 xj8 4.2L Rear Differential Swap

Hey Everyone,

I have a situation with my XJ8 2007 with just under 80k miles. The Rear Differential is whining and has a leak and I got it to a dealership for the fix, however they cannot get the assemblies anymore because of the year and can only put in a new Current Model's with a price tag of 4.2k for the entire job....

I worked with them and they are willing to put in a used one if I purchase it and that price would come down to about $1,000, if I can find it.

So I found some listings for a few (and I also found New condition ones for my year that are around for over 2k...)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-07-JAG...VakJ1J&vxp=mtr

I adore the car, beautiful racing green and smooth ride, and I am scared that throwing in a used Diff will only be a band-aid fix... What would any of you recommend me do? Any of you guys been through this and have any insight on what I should be looking for?

Thanks a lot guys, I hope to hear something soon!

I would not be worried about putting in a new/used differential. This was done recently and documented on the forum at https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-shaft-197555/ .

I don't understand the comment about the differential being a band-aid fix, is there something else wrong with the car?

Have you looked for a differential specialist in your area that can rebuild the old one? I believe this diff was similar or shared with some Ford vehicles. You can probably have the old one rebuilt to better-than-new for the price the dealer is charging to install a used one. At least worth getting a 2nd opinion on it.

Agree with above poster. Try and find a shop that will rebuild it for you, probably for less or about the same as a used one.

Mmmm... interesting that didnt even cross my mind.

I will try to search around, however I did buy a used Diff already and had it sent, i will try to search for that in case I have this issue again. However I know there are not many local shops in my immediate area that even get jaguars for more than once in a blue moon. The dealership is right down the road so it was the simplest answer.

I spoke with the dealer today and they will be flushing the "new" one and replacing the seal whenever it arrives. The one I bought came from a XJ8 with 85k miles.

P.S. By bandaid fix, I ment if my differential already went out, I am concerned that I will be putting in a used one to fail again shortly down the road. From my reading online it seems that the XJ8's differentials commonly fail around 100k miles....

Thanks guys!
