2009 XJ Portfolio
Hi Guys,
ope all are well......just a few little niggly things I thought I would expres and see if anyone has experienced them, main reason I am asking is that my car goes out of warranty next month and thought I would check if its something I should be pushing with the dealer or a hidden fault...
Steering- Previously I was getting a small shake in the steering... though seems random depending on road surface it does come up more often that I have experienced with any other cars, even the x308 - Dealer has checked this and replaced from bushes and arms and also wheel alignment...this improved it a little but still happens now and again. I did read here on some post that others had the same problem and seemed to be put down as a design fault.
Start stop traffic...speed bumps... I find this one hard to explain as when i try and do it I cant... but what seems to happen is when i am in heavy traffic (Start/Stop) well without coming to a complete stop, the car seems to struggle to find the right gear. Same going over a speed pump and almost coming to a stop, but when taking off if I put a little to much pressure on the accelerator it jumps from 2nd to first and lunges, while if I try keep it to a minimum if pulls away very slowly.....
Just recently heard a knock when going over a speed bump...suspensions seems fine and normal, though maybe be related to the bushes and arms as theses were just replaced, more a note...will get this one checked out.
Paint - The x358 seems to scratch very easily....I just have to look at it and I find another scratch, I mean everyday I check it another appears..... I feel like there is no lacquer or something on it as it seems so easy to scratch....or the previous owner had a very good polish that hide them all...... is this common on the aluminum bodies.
Is there anything in particular that I should be checking....
And another little dig at the dealer, for the last ten months I have been inquiring about an extended warranty, the information given was t wait as there was a system coming into play to extend warranties...... In my last service i asked again and was confirmed that a new warranty was put in place yesterday and all rates/terms had finally been confirmed and rates issued, though I could not get it as the car had to be in the dealer warranty before 4 years and 10 months, my car was 4 years 10 months and 10 days....... Despite asking for the last ten months they don't seem to be interested in entertaining me. Grrrrrr
Any comments suggestions will be appreciated.

How many miles on this car ?

Have you got the 20" wheels? Very low profile tyres seem prone to small variations in tyres and also slight wheel buckles. My car on 18" has no problems. A sophisticated wheel alignment rig is really needed to set these cars up properly.
This seems to be a characteristic of the gearbox software. It normally starts in 2nd, but if you welly it, it snaps quickly into 1st with what can sometimes be a thump. Mine does it too, and mine's a 2003 ! I don't think Jaguar covered themselves in glory with this gearbox, the changes can be sudden and thumpy. A TCM software reflash may improve things.
Mine is also very knobbly over small bumps, and I can hear thumps from the rear when going over sharp ridges. Car behaves normally and well, though, in bends etc. Maybe needs an inspection at next service.
Not that I know of. It is a normal auto Clear-over-Base paint, but there is another issue with aluminium body shells and paint, see below.
These cars can suffer from the aluminium crevice, (aka 'filiform') corrosion syndrome in certain places. This shows up as bubbling under the paint, and is caused by the presence of water/salt next to aluminium in the absence/deficiency of atmospheric oxygen. There normally has to be a paint defect in the crevice to start it off. Common places are: -
- corners of doors
- leading edge of bootlid (it creeps round from the underside)
- above number plate light escutcheon on the boot lid
- D-post about 1/3 way down
- D-post creep out by rear screen seal
You can also see this on other aluminium vehicles.

Fraser,
Thank you for the reply...... have put my comments below in answer to your questions.
Car is on 109K km.
20 inch wheels come standard on the portfolio, which does give a much harsher ride compared to my daimler....cant remember what is on them but probably 18 inch
Will get them to reset the software.
Will put it back in in the coming weeks to check the front suspension.
Not seen any bubbles or lifting....will it can be humid here, there is very little rain. (rains once, twice a year) Seems to be minor scratches. If it wasnt so bad i would get 3M film on it to protect it but dont see the point now.
Once again thanks for taking the time in replying.
