Default 50k miles what needs to be done?

I have a 2005 xj8l, I just got nailed on having to put on a new throttle body (1400) and wanted to know what else i should be doing to the car at 50k miles? Belts? Brake fluid change? The *********** pitched those, but at 200 a pop for each i was already hammered enough on the throttle body. What else should be checked, changed out, and how much of it can be done by a non *********** mechanic? My father in law is pretty good at a lot of car stuff, with limited tools, what could he do to save me money? If I am being stupid about this, don't hesitate to say so.

a little off topic, but several of our current and past members work at dealerships jagprog, and if you would like to keep them helping us out, I would recommend we not call their place of employment a '***********'. if it were me, i'd find it derogatory in meaning. If you choose to continue, that is your call, but you most likely won't receive any help from them.

Now back on your topic, at 50k, I would recommend the coolant flush of the system, and definitely the brake fluid. I don't replace belts unless they're squallin or showing cracks/fatigue. A good inspection of these, along with your suspension bushings, looking for leaks, etc is a great idea if you're giving her a good physical. You could do a transmission service, but that's opening up a whole 'nother bag o' worms.

I'll give you my opinion on the plugs too. Mine have been in since origination...94,000 miles, but since the car runs fantastic and fuel mileage is right up there with its factory rating, I haven't touched them.

Others may have some other areas to check or actually do on your 50k milestone.

Sorry, that crack was meant as tongue in cheek, did not mean to offend here. Please accept my apologies.

No prob jagprog, as you can imagine, most people who use the term often mean it in the more insulting manner. Glad you intended more of a sarcasm-type. Now, go ice down your seats.

Default can of worms

anybody care to open up that can o worms and elaborate on this transmission oil change? i have read some other threads, but none of them seem to be very thorough. i would like to see some talk about actually performing the work. and how many of us have done the change at the recommended 60k?

thanks.

Best bet is to read and educate yourself, then make the decision yourself. I think I can say that the majority of owners would do the job, if it wasn't so expensive. Some have done it themselves, using a transmission shop and original jag fluid. I had mine done by the dealer.

What did the dealership charge you ? if you remember i called and inquired about this, never received a return call. Im ordering the jtis cd covering the x350 and am thinking of doing it on my own. along with the pan gasket and rubber sleeve.

the cost of doing it myself will be around $500 with the fluids and gasket. dealers price for oil is $45 a qt x10qts.

I didn't pay anything Strate, it was taken care of under warranty. Sorry. I have a really good service advisor.

It would be nice if we had a Sponsored vendor on the site selling the fluid at a discounted price.

just food for thought

Default Just had a 50K done

Just had mine done for $787. Regular 50K service (check this and that, replace air filter, wipers, oil change etc.) including optional things - brake and coolant fluids replaced (they should have been done at 40K or 5 years according to mydealer) and a 4-wheel alignment due to feathering of the tires and slightly vague handling. I already had the accessory belt replaced at 40K due to squeaking ($212) and at 35K I had the transmission TSB done due to rough changing and a squeak on downshift ($624 - paid for by insurance I took out on transmission and engine). It involved a s/w update, reset and draining 1Q and re-filling with 1Q + an addative. Several people have had the same TSB done with varying results, but for me it cured the problem. I was told the front pads need replacing, but they still have about 5K left so I will get to that in the next couple of months along with the fuel filter.

My wallet and wife need some time to recover....

I thought JTO had the fluid, unless there's a reason why it can't ship ground, he should be able to get it for you.

He has the Esso fluid for the ZF 5HP-24 tranny, not sure about the 6HP, but if he does, he'll see this soon I'm sure and let us know.

Found his thread where he talked about the correct fluid for $150/5 qts here.

ken@britishparts (a forum sponsor and member here) also mentioned the BG brand synthetic as an alternate.

6 speed auto transmission fluid change: Not real interested in folks that bring their car to the dealership for service. Can we talk more about actually performing the work?

Thanks!
