Default 80,000 +miles - How is your Jaguar holding up?

I was at my local Lexus dealer getting some minor items corrected when I ran into my old salesman. The conversation turned to Jaguar's low resale value he he stated that unlike Lexus's and Mercedes, the Jaguars start falling apart around 80,000 miles or so and that it is really hard to sell a Jaguar with more than 75,000 miles. Now I know that its his job to promote the Lexus brand but what about it - how do the old Jags hold up? Most cars take a hit at 100,000 miles but do Jaguars take an additional hit due to their perception of unreliability? Are only Jags any different from the luxury German cars?

Inquiring minds want to know your experiences.

I would say so. Personally I would not buy any Jaguar that was more than 4 or 5 years old and had more than 50k miles on it. My Jag with 48k miles had enough annoying issues.

The only people buying Jags with that many miles on them are people on this board... (aka enthusiasts!)

Buying a used car brings some risks not only for jags but also for other brands even teutons . I agree, unless you are a hardcore Jag fan or something like this , buying an old jag with unknown history and tight budget is not a good thing to do because parts are expensive even though later Jaguars seem fairly more reliable than older ones you know nothing is meant to last forever

Well I admit my car is now 8 years old, and I bought it last year in May on 30k miles, and have taken it to 50k as of last week.

1. Air compressor for suspension
2. Driver door latch
3. Rear discs and pads.
4. Two transmission software reflashes
5. Repaint boot (trunk) lid due to corrosion creeping out from under leading edge.
6. Two front tyres
7. Headlamp washer jet (one)
8. Wiper blades
9. Normal service (two)
10. Two boot lid gas-struts (very cheap from an aftermarket supplier)
11. New rear lower wishbones and spring unit bottom bushes, plus a track-arm on one side

In three years, my previous car, a Rover 75, apart from services, had nothing like so much unexpected expenditure, and I took it from 37k to 84k. I may go back to this car as I retire today and will be on half-pay from now on.

How have others faired ?

I bought the 05 in 08 with 30K on it. It now has 65K. In that time, repairs have been suspension compressor and front shocks and front door latch. Right now the rear parking sensors are not working and it needs a headliner. The rest has been regular maintenance, wipers, battery, tires, oil, filters.

I have a 2006 XJ8 with 77,000 miles that I bought 3 years ago with 40,000 miles. It was an off-lease Jaguar Select car that did not sell at the Jaguar dealer, so they sent it to their sister Mercedes Benz dealer, where I bought it. So, it had been gone over with a fine toothed comb, had new rotors/pads, tires installed. It needed nothing. The only item that needed to be addressed was a faulty serpentine belt tensioner. It has been trouble free other than that and it is a joy to drive.
I read about transmission issues, air suspension components failing and computer issues, and I feel like I have a "built on Tuesday" car, no issues. I have had an Audi and a Lexus that caused more trouble than this car.

What car salesman don't know about what they sell could fill volumes...and they are so quick to prove this every time. Very few know anything about cars, that is NOT their job. They are there to sell cars, it is all about closing the deal. On these forums and my own experience buying dozens of new cars and shopping for used ones has proven this point over and over again.

ALL cars are going to have component failures at some, whether from wear and tear, flaws in manufacturing or how the car was driven. Parts prices vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and just because you have a toyota does not mean it will be cheap to fix, depends on the repair.

Yes Jaguars do have some very expensive parts but so do all of the other luxury brands. Frankly Jaguar/Ford was wise and source many of the components from reliable sources such as Bosch, Toyota (Denso), etc and I see nothing wrong with them...I have owned 4 since 2003 and while the S-TYpe R was lemoned, I have been more than impressed by their reliability even more so than than Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, etc.

What sucks the most is finding a good service center at least in my area, all 3 Jag dealers are duds.

147k and other than 15yr old paint in the texas sun sun. Only maintence and a couple odds and ends. My girlfriends boss has a 2010 6somthing i bmw that she is constantly taking him to the dealer to pick up or drop his bmw off in her 135k 12yr old buick with only maintence done to.
Ive found the more crap you want on your car the more potential you have to go wrong...kidda like playing russian roulet with 2 bullets in a revolver instead of 1
the only thing ive ever seen hold great resal were priuses back in the first $4/gallon era when you saw 2 yr old ones going for about what they cost new 2 yrs earlier and selling like hotcakes

I have a 1998 XJ8 with 109,000 miles on it. I just had the 100,000 miles service done on it and everything checked out fine. Other than the paint on the hood and truck the car is in really good shape. No major mechanical issues that need to be addressed. I love the car. My wife thinks I am crazy because when the dealer had it I drove one of their cars a 2012 XF. Although it was nice and powerful I could not wait to get my XJ back. I looked everywhere for it and I guess I would be classified as a fan. This is my first jag and I bought it at a good price knowing how expensive the upkeep and paint would be.

I have lurked around probably 4 or 5 similar threads to this here over the last couple years, before and after I registered and started posting.

I have been a car freak since my father flashed it into my DNA, probably at conception. I watched him, and helped him alternatively fawn over, fix and thrown tools at his cars and then started on my own, with a 1967 Mustang in 1982 at the age of 17.

These Jags are so perfect. V8, rear drive, tranny behind the longitudinally mounted engine! Everything is where it should be. True, everything's covered by weird shields and pretty plastic bits, but it's all in the right place. I refuse to fear these cats! Even better, the techno-stuff isn't oppressive, either to the driving experience or in the circuitry. True, IF this stuff breaks, it's expensive to fix. But I did my due diligence. The only other car in the same league as my car performance-wise for the money is the 300C SRT8, and it's overall maintenance record and cost of ownership is equal to or greater than the XJR.

I have 138,000K on my 2005 XJR which I bought in 2006 and other than some paint oxidation on the lower part of the driver door, I have just done the normal jaguar maintenance on it. I still love the look of it and what about the power and suspension, just great!!!!

165000 miles on mine now and I have had a new shocker, an air compressor, new discs (rotors) and pads, a second hand phone module, new fan/heater controller, new radiator header tank, two parking sensors, several headlamp bulbs ( non xenon) ,a new audio system amp, oh and all four wishbones as well.
Considering the mileage, I have done 115000 in it roughly, I do not think that that it much to go wrong, it is a 2003 model.

I've owned my '04 about 4 years, never seen a day inside and has 80K. Car drives and looks great. No issues really. Replaced torque converter and that's it outside of normal wear items like brakes...

I think the Lexus salesman is just a salesman... The Jag dealer said Lexus fall apart at 80K, lol.

Mine is a 2000 xj8 paid just under 10 k. with 70,000 miles. Now has 150,000 and after 4 years. New tranny at 3500$ Oh well, I now have a new tranny! I did 130 mph and she felt like it wasn't going to take flight like alot of cars do at 100. When traveling and renting cars, I still feel alittle more special when I climb back in the jag. It's seemly fantastic automobile. I also enjoy pampering it.

i think lexus hold up very well, but ive never heard a lexus described as "sexy", or almost feels like it alive both terms i hear frequently when describing a jaguar. Ever hear the old saying
"there are 3 animals women want in their lives"
a tiger in bed
a mink in the closet
a jaguar in the drive!!!

Never heard
a lexus in the drive

Bought mine w/74K on the clock.

1. Fuel pump went.

2. Noise coming from rear like lumber bouncing around. (still a major mystery to me including the readers on this board) wasted money on isolators.
3. Whine from low gears.
4. Some P0455 errors haven't located that issue either.
5. Did a TB clean myself for good measure.

No other major issue to report YET!!

Planning on doing the rear brakes myself soon and use the air cooled rotor.

Still under 76K, don't drive a lot.

I have exactly 80,888 miles on my 04' XJ8. I bought it 2 years ago with 54,000 miles. In that time I have had only 2 major issues that were fixed. One was the air suspension fault which I replaced the front driver's-side unit, and the other was the throttle body. Then the other things I changed were mostly maintenance stuff like spark plugs, oil filter, and air filter, etc... I think this car should last a long time since I maintain it well. Most cars should last a long time if you maintain it.

I also have a 1997 Mercedes That has 150k miles o. It and needs it's second head gasket, 2nd set of controls arm bushings and is like driving a vw bug compared to my Jag. People have long memories and Jaguars reputation in the USA hasn't caught up with it's improved quality. This makes used Jags a value.

I have 65k on my 2007 and have only had one lower control arm and the transmission line sleeve replaced. Everything else has been regular maintenance. I see no difference in reliability from other cars I have owned.
