So I purchased my 1967 420 3 months ago and never in my dreams thought I would own another Jag right after that, but here it is. It has a couple problems.

It leaks oil,... somewhere. it doesn't drip onto the ground, although the block is pretty oily. In fact, I only drove it about 100 miles and it went though a couple quarts. The oil pressure gauge fluctuates between low pressure and 40 PSI. I am tempted to order up a head gasket kit and exhaust flanges and do a valve job. Is that something that may fix the oil leak? It also will putter a bit at idle but is excellent above 1100 RPMS. Leaking at exhaust manifold a little little bit.

The wipers do not work, which I think is because the switch lever is totally broken in the steering column. Overall it is a pretty awesome car! Looking forward to any suggestions!

Thanks all!

Alex

100 miles and 2 quarts of oil burned and no severe smoke out the pipes or severe drips? Something does not compute here.

Check the spark plugs for oil contamination, do a dry and wet (if needed) compression test to see where you are with the internals of the engine.

Check the cooland as well. Do you see any sticky, milky stuff? (oil into cooland)

Replacing the head gasket will most likely not fix this problem unless you have the right symptoms. Chances are that the head will be stuck anyway and you will have a hell of the time prying it off the block. Not only that, if you manage to get the head off, you will have to replace all the studs because they will be corroded and not worthy of re-using. Getting them out of the block is another story all-together...

Now, on these cars the transmission transducer goes out and mileage quits being recorded on the odometer. So 50,000 miles may not be the accurate account of its use.

How do I know all this and more? Look at my signature....

If you do get to fix it, it will be a beautiful car. It took me 4 years to get mine to shape and drove it for about 7 glorious years daily before retiring it. Its sits now (just like yours) and the plan is to get it back on the road the next couple of years and give it a 2nd lease on life.

Good luck and keep us posted!
