Question Alternator to have on hand

Will the later model alternator C2P1974 work on the 04 XJ8, way prior to vin#H11299? My understanding is it will fit as far as bolting up, but charges at a higher amp rate, or more voltage to the battery. The older ones will not work in newer cars, not enough power, so light is tripped, but will the later, or newer ones, put out too much for the older cars? Idea is to have an assortment of used parts, on the shelf, in good shape ready, to use on either car, when needed. Having new, or known good used, spare, wear parts on hand, at the ready, makes repairs a lot quicker, as well as a lot more pleasant, not having to wait, or rebuild the part yourself, before putting things back together. A good used starter is already on hand, that will fit both 04, and the 07, with an investment of $40 delivered form a 43,000 mile wreck, and looks like new.

I'm due for a new alternator since mine seems to not be doing a dang thing. I was also wondering if there is a higher amp version out there as I have a bunch of stereo equipment that I'm sure doesn't make life easy on the electrical system.

Anyone?

Is there a shop in your area that rebuilds electrical parts? We have an old hole in the wall type a place in Akron, Automotive Electric that will rebuild, exchange, starters, alternators, etc, for little more than you can chase down the parts, & rebuild it yourself. They look better too as they dip or spray to clean them up, as they look almost new, if not all rusty when you started. Point being a higher amperage voltage regulator installed might give you what you want. I'm looking for a single alternator to have on hand, that will plug & play on both cars, without anything to do but install,. Then get the old one rebuilt, so it's ready to go back into service, otherwise, looks as if will have to be rebuilt after taking it out, unless i have two on hand. Not very likely unless found very inexpensively (CHEAP), What year car are you dealing with? Don't think stereo equipment will be an issue with any stock one, that functions properly, especially if an 07 or later.

I'm running a 06 SuperV8. The reason I'm interested in a bit more amperage is because the stereo amps I run are pretty beefy. I don't recall, but I think one has 40 amps of fuses and the other has 60 or so. Not saying that they are likely to be pulling 100 amps of course (not without blowing fuses!), but likely half of that or so. So additional overhead would be nice.

I reached out to a local indie about whether the new ones would fit on the old car, and I'll let you know if they get back to me about it. But historically, they never have much to say about anything that isn't factory.

Also, I noted on Rock-Auto that most of their alternators are 130 amp, but there's one that's 140.

Anyone recommend a brand to go with, or brands to stay away from?

Thanks,
Chris

Thats the reason i asked, about the difference, as my understanding is the ten or so amp difference is it. But will will the 140 trip the lite on the 130 as too much? The 130 is supposed to trip the lite on any car up for for 140 as being too low, i believe.

A 60amp alternator at 13v is 780W.
So you have a stereo rarking more than that ??? Please keep at least 10km away from me :-)

These cars are extremely thirsty when it comes to electrical power. The alternator is sized for the car, not for anything else you may add. Adding a cell phone charger won't matter, but adding equipment that pulls 20, 40, 60 amps could be problematic (and is likely the reason my alternator died an early death, though no way to prove it)

Also, common misconception, but wattage really doesn't have much to do with how loud a stereo is. There are a dozen more factors at play. I could easily build a 10 watt speaker that plays a single tone louder than a 500 watt nicely set up full range system (speaker efficiency matters, crossovers eat up tons of power, need many drivers to cover the human hearing range, will need to massively attenuate some frequency ranges to make all fq level, ect)

I got a quote from my indie, but like I expected, they avoided the question about compatibility or upgrades...
