Default another transmission fault thread

Hi all, 2005 XJR here.

I got a transmission fault that seems to be causing the car to only operate in two gears, maybe 3rd and 4th? I am sort of guessing this judging by 3k rpm at 65mph. I did have some issues about a year ago which I resolved by replacing the pan and refilling the trans with mercon sp, but it has ran well since then. It also whines sometimes when I accelerate too hard, like if I'm on a hill and have to rev it up to get it moving because it's starting in a higher gear.

Anyone ever have this issue or know what can cause it? Being as temperamental as Jaguar's can be I don't want to automatically assume the trans is just bad because things like a slightly low battery can completely destroy every system in the car, etc.

Oh, and I did have the surging rpm issue on cold mornings in the past, if that offers any insight into the issue.

Any fault messages on the dash?

Have you had any ATF leaks?

Check the level of fluid in the Transmission.

Scan for codes.

The surging RPM when cold is 'normal'.

The only message is transmission fault. It was leaking at one point before the pan change and I did top it off once after. I will have to recheck levels.

Why are you losing fluid? Maybe the cooler lines are leaking....
