Default Autodipping mirror green light?

I seem to remember that there was a green light on at the bottom of the rearview mirror. Now it is off. Mirror seems to be working fine. What is the green light for? Nothing in the manual about it. It refers to a mirror with buttons. None on my mirror.

Driver's Handbook: Before Driving, Section 3-9
Interior Rear View Mirror
The interior rear view mirror is of the electrochromic type but electrochromic operation may be switched on or off at the mirror. When switched on, the mirror darkens automatically to prevent glare from a following vehicle's headlamps, and clears when light levels return to normal or when reverse gear is selected. Electrochromic door mirrors are operated in conjunction with the interior mirror by the same buttons and function in the same manner.

Note:
1. Should a mirror assembly become detached from the windscreen, it must be refitted by a Jaguar Retailer.
2. Ensure that the windscreen in front of the mirror is kept clean. Where fitted, the moisture sensor for wiper operation is located to the front of the mirror casing. Any dirt may affect the operation of this sensor.

Electrochromic operation

To switch on, press the MIRROR button. An LED lights up to indicate that automatic operation is selected. Press again to switch off.

This feature is not auto-dipping, which is a Dealer selection option for both driver and passenger mirrors when the vehicle is placed in reverse. These options can be changed with SDD or through the screen options if you have touch screen center display in your vehicle.

Mine does not have a MIRROR button.
Is it from a 2006 model?

As noted, you access it thru the touch screen if you have one.

The 06 had automatic electrochromic operation. The button on the bottom of the rearview mirror would be to enable and disable the compass in the mirror. I posted the X350 manual, the X356 (06) had upgraded electronics, however, mirror dip is as stated.

The mirror appears to work even though the green light is not on. There is a button for the compass but not for auto dipping operation.
The car was in the body shop for three weeks and the battery disconnected. I suspect it is the part of the gremlins associated with low battery voltage. I will disconnect and charge the battery.
What is the procedure for disconnecting the battery? Should I 'short' the terminals?

Follow the procedures in the PDI starting at page 5.

I have never been able to find the button to turn the compass on. Maybe the 06 SV8 with nav never had the compass in the mirror. ?????????

The compass mirrors were only fitted to XJ's that lacked Nav. Nav provides its own compass.

In my search for mirror buttons, I found what is probably the compass button. It is in the location described in the above diagram. One of those recessed buttons that are best pressed by a paper clip or such.
PS I do not have navigation on the car.

Thanks rhankey. I quit looking a long time ago. Glad I did, seemed like it would not be on a nav supplied car.
