My 2004 XJR has developed a coolant leak. I can smell hot coolant when I get out of the car, and I've noticed some coolant under the middle of the car after it's parked. It doesn't leak when it's not hot. I figured the coolant was dripping onto the pan under the car and running off the back side, which is why the drip was in the middle. I knew the aux coolant pump was bad - no heat at idle - so I replaced it. (I now have heat.)

I couldn't find any evidence of a leak anywhere around the radiator or front of the engine. I left the pan off and drove the car until it warmed up, then put it back on my lift. No water under the engine anywhere, but then I found the drip. It's coming from behind the heat shield on the driver's side by the back of the transmission.

I could see it running from the heater core down the right side of the firewall behind the heat shield, but the left side? Any idea where that might be coming from?

 

It's probably the hose against the firewall behind the block. It's a pain to get to and I've been dreading the failure of this hose on my car as well. It's just not easy to get to.

 

What does this hose connect to?

 

i had/have this same problem and its a hose that runs under the supercharger. i had my fixed and costs nearly 2grand to fix and it still leaks....

 

This hose connects underneath the supercharger to the front block back to some other cooling.
Is only a $17 hose, but takes about 8hrs to replace it.
I did it last year, and changed most other hoses too, just to be sure.

I suspect it's the hose under the supercharger. I ordered the parts from your post and started on the job tonight. It's going smoothly for the most part, but can you tell me how to get the false plastic firewall off? I got both side around the cabin filter and brake booster ok, but how does the center section come off?

I've read everything I can find. Closest thing that talked about the center section was in a thread that said you can't get to the EGR valve unless you take the center section of the plastic firewall off, but it's not too hard. I must be missing something, because I'm finding it pretty darn hard.

 

This is as far as I've gotten. I can't get to the EGR valve with the center part of the plastic firewall in place. What am I missing?

 

Also check the thermostat hose the is under the cast elbow, next to the S/C snout

A forum member by the name of dsetter replaced his hose. He just notes to remove the hoses from the EGR but doesn't address how he removed the plastic piece to access it. It's removed in his pic so you might want to try reaching out to him directly. I'd like to know.

I got it off! Thanks for the tips. I pulled the insulation off and found there were push fasteners hidden behind the insulation, as well as double fasteners on top of AND behind the insulation.
