Default Considering getting a new car

I currently have a 1998 XK8 with 96K on it. I am considering a 2001 to 2003 XJ8. Should I assume it will need the same stuff the XK8 did? Chain tensioners, water pump, thermostate etc?

What else should I consider when looking at these cars?

I saw a relly nice 2003 but it had 147K on it A real shame, it looked new inside & out other wise.

Whilst not an expert on these X308 models, I think you'll find any car after 2002 will mostly be OK. The 4.2 engine of the last year followed through into the X350 cars and generally has a good reputation. You could of course jump ship to the X350, (my car), although mine is the V6 Ford engine as fitted to the S-Types too, not the V8.

What year did Jag go to the 4.2 V8? All the ads are saying 4.0 for 2003. Is it a 4.2? did they come with the second Gen. metal tensioners?

AFAIK all the 2002-on cars had metal camchain tensioners. Changeover was at a specific VIN number but I don't know this. Its on this forum somewhere. BTW don't worry too much about the air suspension; if you don't like it you can convert to steel springs. the air compressor is the short-life component, and costs around GBP300 with around 45 minutes fitting time. No doubt about it, air springs are expensive, but internet prices are lower. Arnott Industries also do rebuilt air springs as well as steel conversions.

In the later half of 2003 is when Jag switched from the X308 to the X350. I originally was looking for a X308 and test drove a few but they where not clean enough for me. Then a Jag dealer called me and talked me into looking at a X350 they had sold new and now took it in on trade for a XF. I like the lines of the X308 better but checked the differences between the two and the X350 was far more technologiclly advanced, alum construction and far more goodies and more room inside. I test drove it and the rest is history.

The only down side I see is, if I don't find a new job soon I may be forced to sell it.
