Default Dipstick Tube Bolt/Attachment

Have all of the bolts removed from the left Camcover except the one with the dipstick flange attached. I was a bit surprised that taking these bolts out was not as difficult as I had anticipated. The key, as I've learned from you fellows, is an abundance of 1/4" attachments and different sized 1/4" drives and extensions, swivels & sockets of every known length. Also, I found, the little rachet, whose name I can't recall, with an insert in lieu of the typical attachment was helpful because it was so small.

Is my thinking correct about finishing getting the cover off? Remove the bolt from the dipstick tube flange; then, cut/bend the flange out of the way and remove the cover. This way, the dipstick is left undesturbed.

Thanks and best,

Steve S.

P.S. Bill, the endoscope has really been helpful - thanks.

LEAVE THE DIPSTICK IN THE CRANKCASE. (it will guide the tube back into the hole)

I always remove the small nut, use a 'hook-tool' and slide hammer to get the tube up a few inches and remove the special bolt on the cam cover.

Slide the tube back in place when the cam cover is reinstalled and tap the tube 'home'.

Would there not be a gasket needing to be replaced at the bottom of the tube?

I've removed the small nut. I looked up Sling Hammer, & it appears that by dropping the weight, the tube is loosened so it can be raised just enough to remove cam cover bolt underneath. I'm still wondering if a leak scenario could be created by moving tube up & down?

Thanks Motorcar Man and Thomas!

OK, cutting worked well - decided to try since it worked for Thomas; would have tried the sling hammer if I had one.

I will play with it some more, but I can't seem to get a combination that will work to get the last bolt out. Does anyone recall if it is a #8 or #10?

Thanks and best, Steve S.

OK, a #10, just like the others.

The right-hand cover gasket had no oil on the edge; the one on the left appears to have been leaking up a storm (about 1/3 covered in oil). So, maybe it wasn't my oil pan gasket installation of 2 years ago!

However, there is no way I can get the right cover back on with the fuel regulator attached. Back to the drawing board on how to remove that!

More later. Thanks for getting me this far. On to removing yje water pump bolt.
