Drivers front seat belt issue
Just hopped in my 08 XJ8 and tried to pop the seat belt end into the buckle and no clicky. It would just not catch. Have not WD40'd it yet or tapped it with something, but couple questions for anyone experiencing the same...
- Any idea why it wont catch. Seems like some return spring not doung its duty to set it up for next use after releasing.
- If I have to go to plan B and get a bone yard replacement, what is that long tubelike object at the end. I saw a picture of replacement and see the heavy cable curve around into this tube. I was hoping the buckle cable simply bolted to the tran tunnel, but all these newer cars have so much BS for a simple thing
Thanks!!

Hi Randy,
the seat belt buckle is fixed to the seat itself, not to any pert of the chassis anymore. On cars it's been like this for many years now.
My assumption is that some internal spring or similar has broken and that that is the reason for the non funcioning. Normally, this indeed means that the buckle needs to be replaced because it cannot be repaired.
In order to replace the buckle, you will have to remove the seat, you will not reach the bolts with the seat in situ. Before removing the seat, disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes, otherwise you face the risk of deploying Airbags!
The tubelike object is the belt tensioner, a device that will tighten the seatbelt in case of an accident and is normally also propelled by a small explosive device, same as the airbags.
Best regards,
Thomas

Long shot...but does anyone own a 2006 X-Type and a 2008/9 XJ8?
There is an X in my local bone yard and wondering if seat mounting bolts the same so I bring correct tools and...does seat belt buckle mechanism appear the same?
I will also look at part numbers on SNG, but just checking
