Default Factory Lug Nut Caps spinning on Lug nut

I have a 2004 XJ 8 and need to remove the wheels the Lug Nut caps just spin on the lug nut.

They all seem to be very loose.

How do you remove the caps ?

And is there a one piece lug nut replacement for the factory nuts?

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ralph

I used a cheasel and a drill to remove the caps - it's really thin metal. I got a full set of replacement lug nuts off eBay - all solid with chrome finish. They appear from time to time.

Very common fault on S-types. Read all about it:

Default lug nuts

Had this problem with my 99 xjr, take a socket same size as nut, rotate stainless steel cap so it is positioned on the nut as designed. Take socket, position on nut and pound on to nut as long as the flats are lined up,the socket will mate and just unbolt.

Thank you all for the information . I spent the better part of Sunday morning about 2 hours removing lug nuts from my XJ8 so I could check the brake pads. I used a lug nut wrench with 19mm size the wrench was 20 inches long purchased a professional quality one at the local auto parts store. could not break any of then loose. I had a piece of thick wall PCV pipe that fit over the 22mm the PCV pipe was about 5 feet when I started, First lug nut came loose without breaking a stud, second lug nut I broke the PCV pipe at the wrench end about 4 inches broke off third lug nut broke loose 4th lug not broke the pipe again about 8 inch crack along the length of the pipe. cut pipe down to about 4 feet seems to be the perfect length all other lug nuts broke loose no issues with any studs breaking. The lug nut covers have to go , so I will be purchasing solid chrome plated lug nuts researching some manufacturers will make final decision and post outcome. Again thanks for the help with this issue

These are easy to find at any Mitsubishi dealer

Mitsubishi # MR455707 $4.80 each

or go here for an aftermarket version that is a couple dollars each.

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=970739

These are exactly what you need. Solid steel chrome plated.

I replaced all of them on my 05 VDP with the dealer version.

Note that these have a larger hex so the standard tire iron will not work (it is a POS anyway). I bought a nice craftsman bar and socket to keep in the trunk.

Thank you for the information. I had this happen with a flat tire on the 5th lug nut after removing the first 4. That cost me a tow to the dealer and labor for them to get the damn thing off too.

I change them with all things Toyota lugs. Take one to Toyota dealer and match them up. Much better lug nut. And much less money.
Have them on my XJR. Just rember to get a new lug wrench frome Toyota also.

Ok, I hope this helps.
The OEM lug nuts on my 2004 XJR are junk.
Caps came off some but not others....
Looking to replace them at the dealer WOW list for $18 each.
(and still junk)
So, looking for just good old chrome lug nuts.
I found (of all things) toyota use about the same thing.
They do not have the extra washer but still work great.
They list for $5.12 ea.
Look great and better made. Just get your self a new wrench for your trunk to fit the new lugs. I got a Toyota one. Again the wrench is better also.
The part number for the Toyota lugs 90942-01083.
Good Luck!!!!

Had the same issue... Either the cap would spin or became rounded and the factory tire iron is garbage. Called jaguar and they told me it was $25 each. Found a solid chrome set of four from pepboys for $6.50. I plan on replacing all factory lug nuts... Dont want to take the chance of catching a flat and not being able to take the tire off

I guess you have to figure out the dimensions for your specific lug nut. I took one lug nut to pepboys and matched them up to find the one that matches

I too had a quick look round the internet to see what is available. There are chrome-plated solid steel ones on sale, but there seem to be no solid stainless ones, only the stainless-capped ones that cause the rounding problem.

Regarding white knight, I had some difficulty finding a company that could buy from them directly. Costco - no, Discount Tire - yes. Though they have taken 3 months to ship my 20 lug nuts to Discount Tire, I am hoping it will be worth the wait.

Whiteknight only sells wholesale i guess... I picked my up from Pepboys so try there... I figured that Lugnuts are pretty much fancy screws. Take one of your lug of your wheels and head to your local AutoZone or Pepboys and see what they have that might work... After a week of calling and hearing we dont have anything that would fit i just went to the counter with the factory lug and said a need a repacement. Took less than 5 minutes and bingo...

I got a set from these guys some time ago - the nuts are really solid and IMO look better than the dreadful caps.
